Installing Ubuntu Debian Linux

Download ISO images

Burn a cd for each iso. You will need one CD for each ISO. Generally you will not need the SRPM CD's (at least until after the install).

You can burn a cd with the following command:

If you do not have the mkcd command or it does not work, you can use:

Boot from CD #1 and follow the instructions.

Get the kernel debian kernel package by typing

sudo apt-get linux-source-2.6.10

which will create the file /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.10.tar.bz2 containing the linux source already patched the way Ubuntu needs it patched.

install make-kpkg with
```
sudo apt-get kernel-package
```
which is needed to build the kernel.
install sources by extracting /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.10.tar.bz2 into ~/Software/linux
make xconfig (or gconfig, menuconfig, etc)
make-kpkg --rootcmd sudo clean
make-kpkg --append-to-version acorn2 --initrd --rootcmd sudo kernel_image
sudo dpkg --install ~/Software/linux/linux-source-2.6.10/kernel-image-2.6.10_a....deb
copy lines from /boot/grub/menu.lst to actual grub/menu.lst file. On blackdragon actual file is /mnt/p6/grub/menu.lst (/grub/menu.lst on the boot partition, partition 6). Hopefully on other machines this step is unnecessary as the boot partition should be mounted at /boot in the filesystem (it is not on blackdragon due to installing different distributions in a wierd order I think).

The easiest way to look for and install packages is to run

sudo synaptic

You can also install a particular package named <pkg> with

sudo apt-get <pkg>

A list of packages installed on my blackdragon machine is kept in debian_pkglist.html.
