Do NOT use the "restricted drivers" program in Ubuntu to install the NVIDIA drivers.
To download and install a driver for an nvidia graphics card follow these steps:
- run lspci and look for the line(s) mentioning VGA. Write down what kind of graphics card you have.
- Go to http://www.nvidia.com. Click "Download Drivers". Choose a graphics driver for your card and OS. Download it. Save it in the ~/Archive/nvidia directory.
- Switch to a terminal window by typing CTRL-ALT-F2 and login.
- Stop X11 by typing one of these commands:
sudo stop gdm <-- works in later ubuntu
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop <-- works in earlier ubuntu
sudo services gdm stop <-- not tested
- Backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf if it exists:
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.acorn_orig
- Run:
cd ~
sudo bash ./Archive/nvidia/NVIDIA_DRIVER_DOWNLOAD_FILE.run
