House music in San Francisco
Well, it looks like things are really going off in SF with the Blasthaus crew; I just got an email from a friend telling me that Staple is once again a going concern. I can't even tell you the number of great nights out I had in '99/'00 thanks to their nights at The Rawhide II on 7th Street. I saw Theo Parrish, Random Factor, DJ T-1000 and a ton more at that place and always went home happy. I also got a kick out of the venue, normally a gay cowboy bar with crazy cast-iron saddle stools that rode up on you when you sat down, but filled to the brim with a completely mixed (race, gender, orientation) crowd for the Staple crew. They're at the Rx Gallery now, which is also a great venue, if not as kitsch as the Rawhide II.
Speaking of Rx, I see that Blasthaus is also putting on Luomo at the end of the month, I can hardly believe I'm missing that here in London. Not to complain, I've seen Ricardo a few times, Zip, Cassy, Luciano and more, but still, man, Luomo! Last time he played in SF it was nothing short of spectacular. Hopefully I'll catch up with him on this side of the pond over the summer.
