Lock Down Your Aerial

Listening to The Streets' "Original Pirate Material" for the first time in a long time, thanks to the bit in Bring the Noise that suggested a reapparaisal vis-à-vis the end-of-rave-as-vanguard theme that runs through the last quarter of the book, and what strikes me the most is the prominence of the Brixton references that occasionally crop up, "While London Bridge is burning down/Brixton's burning up," "back to the Dogstar," etc. Funny how the album that perhaps most reminds me of my first year in the UK, living in Leeds, should be so pregnant with references to my future London stomping grounds - SW2, big up yourself!

Future of Music, Coalescing

The Motley Fool today:

A less restrained distribution model would move some of the control from the music industry's hands and into the consumer's...I'm thinking "paradigm shift" here -- the end of massive superstars, and the rise of music for the people, by the people, and of the people.

Jacques Attali thirty years ago:

Today, in embryonic form, beyond repetition, lies freedom: more than a new music, a fourth kind of musical practice. It heralds the arrival of new social relations. Music is becoming composition.

I guess this kind of makes up for all that stuff in Noise about death motels, etc.

I've only just gotten around to putting some documentation of a project I did in London last April online: Homeless and Blue, in which I and a partner sent messages to people's mobile phones via Bluetooth as a way of exploring issues around homelessness, public space, and the digital divide.

More pictures related to the project can be found here.

R.I.P. Anthony H. Wilson

Tragic news.

It's hard to think of a worse note upon which to leave the country. Wilson was simultaneously an inspiration and a right bastard, as all good Mancunians should be, in my reckoning. Cambridge grad, mouthy ponce, agent provocateur, Wilson was all three at once. England didn't deserve him, and vice versa. He will be sorely missed.

Ha!

Well, in a follow-up to my first ever blog post, what do I see when I check Pitchfork this morning but this, in the front-page teaser for the new Vladislav Delay album review:

The Finnish electronic whiz best-known as Luomo revists his dubby ambient guise.

Unlike Dominique Leone's 2003 review of The Present Lover, the review itself doesn't make this claim, and of course one has to allow for the different reviewers' perspectives - Andy Battaglia's been followiing the minimal/microhouse/techno beat for a long time, both in The Onion and more recently in Pitchfork, so it's quite likely that from his perspective Sasu Ripatti is better known as Luomo, but still, a pretty funny reversal from the 'Fork, all told.

House music in San Francisco

Well, it looks like things are really going off in SF with the Blasthaus crew; I just got an email from a friend telling me that Staple is once again a going concern. I can't even tell you the number of great nights out I had in '99/'00 thanks to their nights at The Rawhide II on 7th Street. I saw Theo Parrish, Random Factor, DJ T-1000 and a ton more at that place and always went home happy. I also got a kick out of the venue, normally a gay cowboy bar with crazy cast-iron saddle stools that rode up on you when you sat down, but filled to the brim with a completely mixed (race, gender, orientation) crowd for the Staple crew. They're at the Rx Gallery now, which is also a great venue, if not as kitsch as the Rawhide II.

Speaking of Rx, I see that Blasthaus is also putting on Luomo at the end of the month, I can hardly believe I'm missing that here in London. Not to complain, I've seen Ricardo a few times, Zip, Cassy, Luciano and more, but still, man, Luomo! Last time he played in SF it was nothing short of spectacular. Hopefully I'll catch up with him on this side of the pond over the summer.

Blogging

Final papers are in, just an exam left to study for and my dissertation, so hopefully I'll be picking up the blog again soon. I have tentative plans to head to Berlin at the end of the month, I hope to check this out, it should be quite an eye-opener.

In other news, I may be staying here in London longer than I had originally planned, we'll see...

Burrito update

Oh yeah, you remember when I said I was going to try the Mexican food at the Dogstar? Well I did, and it wasn't much to blog about, which might explain the extended hiatus here. Advice to British Mexican cuisine entrepreneurs, when making a burrito:

Do not use "Tex-Mex" style kidney bean chili as the beans

Do not bake the burrito. Keep it away from ovens. Steam the tortilla, stew the beans, boil the rice, mix them together and they will stay warm.

That said, it wasn't terrible, but I do think Beach Burrito Café on Berwick Street in Soho has got to take the cake for me, especially now that they've expanded their menu a bit - you can finally order a bean & cheese burrito instead of their weird veggie burrito (Sweet potatos? Not in my burrito), and it's right across from Music & Video Exchange and down the street from Sister Ray, so you might say I'm around a lot.

Still, I was making a list of SF things to do for a friend's girlfriend who is flying there for a conference and got pretty sad and hungry listing all the great taquerias. Oh London, so much to answer for...

Give Me Some Peppermint Freedom

With only a couple of days to go, I still can't believe I'm going to see The Orchids. After all these years I never thought they'd get back together, let alone that I'd have the chance to see them. I still have very fond memories of driving around in my '77 Volvo with Epicurean stuck in the tape deck - I never got bored of it, must've been in there for months.

And Slipslide is playing too, I don't think they ever play out, either. Definitely a night of serious pop.

Where Angels Fear to Tread

OK, so I am certifiably insane. Last time I moved to the UK I picked up the sick habit of trying all the (horribly bad) Mexican food I could find - you have not lived until you've seen burritos baked in a crockpot like casserole. Looks like the quality may have improved in my absence:

Terrible timing

How is it that the three bands I am most interested in at the Bleeding Edge Festival are all playing at the same time?!

That would be Black Dice, Frivolous and Yo La Tengo, for your reference. YLT I can live with missing, but scheduling Black Dice and Frivolous at the same time presents major dilemmas. Black Dice have been nothing short of amazing every time I've seen them but even in the largely minimal-friendly Bay Area how often is it you get to see someone on Karloff throw down? Seems like we're criminally overlooked by techno acts, unless they're from LA...
