Scientific Visualization
and Data Sonification

In 1996 I received an M.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of California at Santa Cruz. My area of emphasis was scientific visualization and my thesis topic was data sonification.

Listen: A Data Sonification Toolkit

The results of my thesis research were published in the 1996 proceedings of ICAD (International Conference on Auditory Display). This links to the text of the article.

LISTEN: Sounding Uncertainty Visualization

The Listen toolkit was incorporated into two scientific visualization research projects at UCSC. An article about one of those projects, the use of sound in visualizing uncertainty, was published in the 1996 proceedings of the IEEE Visualization Conference (Suresh K. Lodha, Catherine M. Wilson and Robert E. Sheehan, “LISTEN: Sounding Uncertainty Visualization”, IEEE Visualization 1996 Conference Proceedings, 1996, pp. 189-196).

This page at Iowa State contains a synopsis of the Listen toolkit as well as other research projects involving the use of sound in scientific visualization. It is also possible to download the source code for the Listen toolkit and a Postscript (or .dvi) copy of my thesis from this site.
