Samuel died Nov 26 1893, Lake City, Calhoun County, Iowa; buried Lake City Cemetery, Lake City, Calhoun County, Iowa.5

Samuel's obituary was published in the "Lake City Graphic" (Lake City, Iowa) on November 30, 1893:5

Died, Saturday, Nov 26, 1893, of old age, Samuel Fletcher, aged 90 years, 5 months and 3 days.

The deceased was born in Franklin county, N. Y., June 29, 1803.  At the age of 21, Oct. 9, 1834, he was married to Miss Maria Doty.

Mr. Fletcher was the father of eleven children, two of whom preceded him across the dark waters to the home beyond, and none of whom still remain to mourn his loss.

For a number of years he has made his home in that of his son, David Fletcher, in Lake City.  A man of strong constitution, he never had known what sickness was, and when the final summons came, it was but the giving way and stoppage of old, worn out physical machinery.  He had served more than the allotted three score years and ten, and passed away without a struggle or twinge of pain, simply falling asleep.

While the parting with loved ones always brings sadness and sorrow, it is not for us to mourn the departure of one so old.

Card of Thanks.
We desire to return our sincere thanks to the friends and neighbors who so kindly assisted us in our late and sad affliction.  Mr. And Mrs. D. D. Fletcher.

Maria Doty died Dec 27 1896, age 80.28

Samuel was mentioned in a 1918 history of early Fort Covington, New York:7

When the first settlers other than those connected with the mills came, and who they were, is not known with certainty.  Dr. Hough's history names Samuel Fletcher, Aaron McLean, Ambrose Cushman, John Hunsden, David Lynch and Robert, Walter and Duncan Buchanan as having located in 1800 or soon thereafter; but the records in the county clerk's office do not show any of these except Robert Buchanan as having had title to real estate in the township at anything like the date stated, though it is known from State records that Mr. Hunsden was there in 1803 as clerk of the Indians.

...

Samuel Fletcher is marked as owning the lot next west of Ambrose Cushman.  At a later date he was a merchant at West Constable or Westville Corners, and eventually removed to St. Lawrence county.  He was an uncle of Calvin T. Fletcher of Helena, who at one time practiced law in Malone, and the great uncle of the late Ernest T. Fletcher of Malone.  Thomas Fletcher is thought by Stiles Stevens, his grandnephew, and exceptionally well informed on points of early local history, to have been the man who was shot by the British when they raided the town in 1812, though Mr. Briggs remembered the name as Frazer.  Mr. Stevens is probably correct.

Samuel was mentioned in a 1918 history of early Westville, New York:7

Early merchants at the Corners were Samuel Fletcher, Meigs & Wead, Ebenezer Man, Henry G. Button, Edwin Phillips and John Doty, Charles and Horace Johnson, Abner Doty, Goodrich Hazen, William Smith and Amos Cushman.

Samuel's parents and ancestry are not known, although there is one person's family tree posted on ancestry.com which claims (without citing any sources) that Samuel's father was a Samuel Fletcher, born about 1758.9  Samuel's obituary stated that he was born in 1803 in Franklin County, New York.5  If correct, it does seem to contradict the "Historical sketches of Franklin County" which stated "Dr. Hough's history names Samuel Fletcher" ...  "having located in 1800 or soon thereafter"7 (which could not be this Samuel Fletcher but perhaps might have been his father).29  The 1820 census of Franklin County, New York shows only one full Fletcher family, headed by a Samuel Fletcher:30

1 male under age 10.
1 male age 15-25 (which would be the right age for this Samuel).
1 male over age 45 (presumably head-of-household Samuel Fletcher).
1 female age 10-15.
1 female age 15-25.
The 1830 census of Franklin County, New York shows only one Fletcher family, headed by a Martha Fletcher:31
1 male age 20-30 (which would be the right age for this Samuel).
1 female age 15-20.
1 female age 50-60 (presumably Martha Fletcher).

The "Historical sketches of Franklin County" mentions that Samuel (or the above Samuel Fletcher Sr.) "was an uncle of Calvin T. Fletcher of Helena" ...  "and the great uncle of the late Ernest T. Fletcher of Malone".7  Calvin T. Fletcher's obituary32 stated that he was born in 1838 in Lawrence, New York, and died Mar 11 1906 in Helena, St. Lawrence County, New York, but it did not mention his parents or other relatives.

The 1894 book "Our County and its People: A Memorial Record of St. Lawrence County New York" included a biographical sketch of Calvin T. Fletcher:33

Fletcher, Calvin T., Brasher, was born in Lawrence, September 17, 1838, a son of Chauncey and Orpha S. (Ketch) Fletcher, the former born in Mansfield, Conn., June 2, 1800, and the latter born in Starkboro, Vt., October 11, 1800.  They came to this county when it was a wilderness, and had these children: Nancy, Janet, Julius A., Cleora A., Franklin R., Charles A., Olive A., Clark, Calvin T., and Martha A.  Chauncey Fletcher died February 3, 1886, and his wife November 25, 1860.  The family trace their ancestry in a direct line back to William the Conqueror.  Rev. Richard Fletcher, chaplain to Queen Elizabeth, was also one of the family.  He afterwards became bishop of London.  The American branch of the family have many of them followed [sic] agriculture, and descended in direct line from Robert Fletcher, who came to America in 1630 and settled near Boston.  Our subject was educated in the Lawrenceville Academy, studied law at Malone, and was admitted to the bar in 1864, practicing a few years, and then engaging in mercantile pursuits with his first wife's father, J. G. Reynolds, at Bombay.  In 1871 he came to Helena, where he engaged in trade.  October 12, 1865, he married Fredonia A., daughter of J. G. Reynolds, of Bombay.  She died August 30, 1870.  Their children were: Gates R., born in 1866, died in 1868; Ernest T., born November 2, 1868; Ormel, born and died in 1870.  He married second Augusta A., daughter of John Sengfeld, of West Chazy, N. Y., November 9, 1871, and their children were: Lura F., born November 29, 1875; Clark E., born October 14, 1879; Charles F., born October 16, 1881.  Mr. Fletcher is a Democrat, and has been supervisor several years, also notary public for many years.  He has a fine trade, and owns several farms.  His oldest son, Ernest T., is a successful merchant in Tupper Lake, N. Y., and was recently appointed postmaster.
From the above we can conclude that (this) Samuel Fletcher was apparently a brother of Chauncey Fletcher34 (i.e. uncle to Calvin T. Fletcher and great-uncle to Ernest T. Fletcher).
