Born Nov 13 18161,2 [about 18153,4,5], Ohio1,2.

Hannah was shown in the 1850 census (Aug 16 1850), living with the family of her younger brother Allen in Crawford County, Missouri:6,7

Hannah Doty, age 34, born in Ohio.

She married William Eaton Hawkins, Aug 25 1850, Crawford County, Missouri.8,9  William, son of William Eaton Hawkins & Catherine Bolling, was born Feb 12 1794, Greenville County, South Carolina.10,11

William was a widower, having previously married Permelia Carr Duncan, who had died Oct 22 1848.12

William died Feb 14 1851, Crawford County, Missouri; age 57y 2d.10,11

She then married Spencer "Stephen" Altom3,8,13,14,15 [Spencer Altum16,17], Sep 14 18533,8,13,14,15, Crawford County, Missouri3,8,13,14,15.  Spencer, son of James Bulger Altom & Sarah "Sally" Nichols, was born Jul 8 1821, Illinois.1,2,4,5,13,18

Spencer Altom had been previously married to Malona Parks3 (Malvina Parks,16,17 Vina Parks)19 on Apr 10 1845, Franklin County, Missouri,2,3,16,17 by whom he had children:2,19,20

John P. "Jack" Altom, born Feb 7 1846, Missouri; died Jan 4 1890; married Mary Doty. 19,21
Lucinda Altum, born c1847, Missouri. 19

Note: Some researchers have concluded that Spencer Altum married secondly to a Hannah Harrell (born Nov 13 1816), not Hannah Doty.13  The LDS IGI, citing Crawford County, Missouri marriage records, shows Hannah Hawks as the bride of this marriage.24  Other transcriptions show Hannah Hunter as the bride of this marriage.14  The original marriage records are handwritten and extremely faded8 (see scans below), but from the two known marriage records it can be concluded that Hannah first married (briefly) to William Hawkins, then secondly to Spencer Altum, with the second marriage recording her as "Hannah Hawkins".  Doty family history, as handed-down to a granddaughter of Hannah's brother James, shows it was this Hannah Doty who married Spencer Altom.15  Note also that the death certificate of daughter Serena Altum clearly shows her parents were Spencer Altum and Hanah Doty25 (see scan below).

Children:

Serena J. Altum, born Dec 11 1854, Missouri; died Jan 12 1920, Gainesville, Cooke County, Texas, buried Jan 14 1920, Dye Cemetery; married 1) Fenton G. Caldwell; 2) -- Bond. 2,13,25,26

On Mar 4 1898, the "Marion County Democrat" published on the front page "Scenes of His Childhood", by step-son James Bulger Altom:31

While alone my mind runs back to my boy-hood days of 40 years ago, when in Old Marion County, for it was about that time I landed there.  I lived there abour 19 years.  My father, Spencer Altom, bought a farm 5 miles east of Patoka, on the road running to Salem.  It was there that I lived and passed the happiest days of my life among relatives and friends, going to the Chance school house house to school; but where are now my school-mates of those days?  There are but few left to tell the tale.  Some sleep beneath the sod to await the final judgement; others have done as I have done, gone to remote places.  It was in Marion Count that I took unto myself a wife.  September 27th, 1874, I wedded Miss A. B. Bassett, and in the spring of 1876, in company with my father, brother and brother-in-law, I departed for Texas, leaving behind many friends whom I have nto since seen.  We landed in Sherman, Texas on the first day of April and there took wagons for the far west.  We located in Stevens county and remained there till August.  It being very dry there, we returned to Cook [sic] county and settled in Cross-timbers.  In August, 1877, my brother-in-law, Fenton G. Caldwell, died.  March 17, 1882, my father departed this life, and on the 7th of September, 1883, my mother, Hannah Altom, crossed Jordan's river.  January, 1892, my brother, John P. Altom, was called hence.  And so half of the older ones have crossed the chlly watters of death.  After the departure of these dear relatiaves, I sold my little farm in the timber and moved to the prairie and there lived 7 years, forming many new acquaintances and friends.  In June, 1897, I sold my property there and moved to Indian Territory, where I now am.  Here I find people who formerly lived in the various States of the Union; they are generally poor, and I have found this section the best in the land for such people.  We have an abundance of grass, wood and water, and the soil very fertile and productive.  It produces well, wheat, oats, corn, cotton, vegetables and melons.  One can purchase land here on time payments.  I don't meant that one can actually owne [sic] land here, but in the near future such will be the case.  We have a gtood market; Moore is our nearest railrod point; from it 48,000 bales of cotton will be shipped.  It has a flouring mill, electric plant, 2 national banks; population about 4,000, good schools and churches.  It had a commodious court house, but it was burned last fall.  The jail is large and just now has 90 inmates; hence all are not obeyors of the law.  I will be pleased tohear from any of my old Marion County friends.  My postoffice address is, Hewitt, Indian Territory.
James B. Altom
