He married Dora E. "Veronica" Martin, Jul 28 1878, Marion County, Illinois.^2,13  Dora was born Aug 11 1853² [about 1855¹⁰], Ohio².  

James and Veronica were shown in the 1880 census (Jun 8 1880), Marion County, Illinois:¹⁰

James and Veronica apparently divorced or separated.  Veronica remarried (as Dora E. Doty) to Stephen Hunsley, Jul 8 1889, DeWitt County, Illinois.²  Dora died Jan 30 1927, DeWitt County, Illinois; buried Woodlawn Cemetery, Clinton, DeWitt County, Illinois.²  

He then married Nancy Ella Cruse, Sep 25 1892.^7,15  Nancy, daughter of Noble Cruse & Elizabeth Ann Pruitt^7,12,15, was born Sep 7 1864^7,12,15 [Sep - 1865⁴], Illinois^7,12,15.  

Ella had been previously married to Thomas W. Chick, Sep 29 1883, who had died Feb 26 1890,¹⁵ and by whom she had children Dessie, Jessie and Nobel/Nobie Chick.^4,15
