Born Mar 23 1952, Lying Inn Hospital, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

Jan grew up on the south side of Chicago (10934 S. Vernon Ave.), in an apartment neighborhood.  One of his favorite childhood passtimes was to go with his friend Roger VerBeeren to the nearby Illinois Central Railroad tracks and watch the commuter trains come and go (and of course place pennies on the tracks).1

He initially attended Pullman grade school, in the old Pullman neighborhood of Chicago's south side (where George Pullman once built his famous railroad cars).  In third grade he transferred to nearby Holy Rosary school so he could receive what his mother considered a good Catholic education (although he never did seem to be able to get to Mass on time each morning).  Singing in the school choir was a fond memory of this time.1

In 1964 the family moved to South Holland, a then far south suburb of Chicago.  As a result, he again transferred schools in the 7th grade to St. Jude the Apostle school in South Holland.  He later attended Thornridge High School and Thornton Community College.1

In 1971, while attending community college in computer programming classes, he was offered a job as a programmer with the Midwest Stock Exchange, which he gladly accepted.  In 1973 he took a position as a Systems Engineer in the Chicago office of Four-Phase Systems, a minicomputer company in what was then a young Silicon Valley.1

He married Jeannette DeAmicis, Aug 9 1975, Midlothian, Cook County, Illinois.1  Jeannette, daughter of Eliseo DeAmicis & Patricia Ann Collins, was born Mar 22 1953, St. Bernard's Hospital, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.1

Still with Four-Phase Systems in 1975, he was then a national technical troubleshooter and travelled extensively.  Marriage necessitated a new job with less of a travel demand, so the company moved Jan & Jeannette to California, where they have lived ever since.1

Jan's career was in software engineering, with several Silicon Valley networking companies, where he was involved early in LANs and high-speed packet processing (several patents).  He is currently (2014) retired and residing in Prescott, Arizona.  A favorite late-night hobby is genealogy.
