Born Jul 22 1893, Henry County, Indiana.1,2,3  

Zula was a teacher in the Kennard (Indiana) School and after the death of brother Herbert Hinshaw's wife Elizabeth, Zula kept house for him, helping to raise his daughter, (Sarah) Guinevere.1  

Zula was also an artist.  One of Zula's paintings is in the collection of the Ohio Historical Society Museum in Columbus, Ohio; the subject of her painting was a relative of Ada Iona Jarrett, the wife of Zula's brother, Floyd, who had been visiting Indiana from the Eastern Band Cherokee reservation in North Carolina.4  Several of Zula's paintings are also in the collection of the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis, Indiana, some of which at one time were loaned-out to the Smithsonian for a Midwestern Woman Artists exhibit.4  

Zula remained unmarried.1,2

Zula's obituary was published in the "Anderson Daily Bulletin" (Anderson, Indiana) on Monday, October 12, 1964.5,6

Dies Of Illness

WILKINSON -- Miss Zula M. Hinshaw, 71, a lifelong resident of the Kennard community, died Saturday evening at the Henry County Hospital in New Castle.  She had been ill for a long time.  

A retired teacher, Miss Hinshaw had taught for 35 years in the Shirley and Kennard grade schools and in the Kennard, Carthage, and Straughn high schools.  She was a member of the Kennard Friends Church, the Household Circle of the church, the Rural Progress Home Ecinomics [sic] Club, and the Kennard Social Club.  

Surviving are three brothers, Russell H. Hinshaw of New Castle, Floyd Hinshaw of Spiceland, and Herbert Hinshaw of near Shirley south of Kennard, with whom she made her home; and 11 nieces and nephews.  

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Kennard Friends Church, with the Rev. Lois Zimmerman of near Knightstown officiating.  Burial will follow in the Glen Cove Cemetery near Knightstown.  

Friends are being received at the Condo and Son Funeral Home, and will be received at the church an hour before the service.
