Born about 1834, Missouri.1,2,3,10 (Feb - 1837).11 (possibly born in Buchanan County).4
Henry R. Henshaw is believed to have descended from a line of Henshaws who had settled in the South and became wealthy landowners with numerous slaves. According to family stories, Henry inherited the slaves and his brothers and sisters inherited the land, stock and money; his slave wealth was lost with the Emancipation Proclamation and he became penniless.12
He married Anna B. Percival, Aug 10 1854, Clay County, Missouri.5,6,7 (Aug 11 1854).6 Officiated by E.S. Dulin, M.G.6 Anna was born about 1836, Indiana.2 (c1838).3

Henry served in the Army during the Civil War,4 as a private16 (corporal)8 in Company C, 5th U.S. Infantry.8,16 Enlisted Mar 17 1865 at Alton, Illinois16 (Feb 1865);8 mustered-out Oct 16 1866, Ft. Kearney, Nebraska.8,16 He was captured and imprisioned at either Jefferson Barracks, Missouri or at a prison in central St. Louis.4
Henry was a doctor4 (or had previous medical training),12 and cared for the other prisoners in his prison camp.4
During his imprisonment, a Union soldier by the name of George W. Shanks walked guard duty in the prison. About 20 years later, the guard's daughter, Susan Shanks, married Henry Henshaw's son, Jared Richard Henshaw.4

Anna died before Jun 8 1900.9
On Jun 7 1898 Henry R. Henshaw was admitted to a national home for disabled volunteer soldiers in Leavenworth, Kansas. He was recorded as having cancer, age 63, 5'8" tall, light complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair; widower; farmer; resident of Faucett, Missouri; nearest relative: son John B. Henshaw of Faucett, Missouri.16
Widower Henry was shown in the 1900 census (Jun 8 1900), a patient in [..first word unclear..] National Military Home in Lansing, Delaware Township, Leavenworth County, Kansas:11

(This was probably the "National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Western Branch", now the "Dwight D Eisenhower Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center" in Leavenworth, near Lansing).15
Henry R. Henshaw died Sep 4 1909, Leavenworth, Kansas; buried Sep 5 1909, Section 26, Row 4, Site 17, Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas.16,19,20,21
