William H. Hanshew2,3,4,5,6,7,8 [Henry Henshaw1].
Recorded as William Hanshew in the 1850 census8 and the death certificates for several of his children;2,3,4,7 William H. Hanshew in the 1880 census5 and in the death certificate for daughter Mary J. Hanshew;6 but Henry Hanshew in the 1870 census.1 One might reasonably conclude that his full name was probably William Henry Hanshew.9
Born about 1836, Indiana.1,5,8
He married Mellisa Levell4 [Malissa Levell6, Mallisie Level2, Melissa Level3, Malisa Level7]. Mellisa was born about 1837, Indiana.1
Henry and family were shown in the 1870 census (Jul 22 1870), White River Township, Hamilton County, Indiana:1
Henshaw, Henry, age 34, born in Indiana; farmer; $200 personal property; cannot read or write.
Henshaw, Melissa, age 33, born in Indiana; keeping house.
He then married Allice -.5 Allice was born about 1858, Massachusetts.5
William and family were shown in the 1880 census (Jun 21 1880), Union Township, Madison County, Indiana:5
Hanshew, William H., age 43, born in Indiana; father born in Ohio; mother born in Virginia; laborer.
Hanshew, Allice, wife, age 22, born in Massachusetts; parents born in Massachusetts; keeping house.
Hanshew, Arrena, daughter, age 10, born in Indiana; parents born in Indiana.
Hanshew, Mary E., daughter, age 3, born in Indiana; father born in Indiana; mother born in Massachusetts.
Gustin, Charles, age 33, born in Indiana; parents born in Ohio; laborer.
There is a burial in Glen Cove Cemetery, Kightstown, Henry County, Indiana for a William Henry Hanshaw, born in Elwood, Madison County, Indiana (date unknown), who died Dec 9 1878.10 That burial might be this William/Henry Hanshew,9 although it seems to conflict with the 1880 census above, where William was recorded alive with his family. It's possible that the death date was transcribed incorrectly (1888? 1898? hard to read old gravestone?),9 or it might be a different William Henry Hanshaw/Hanshew entirely.9 This William is not known to have lived in or near Knightstown, Indiana.
Alice might have remarried to a John Tolbert.9 See unidentified William Hanshew #20421 who married Alice Meichel/Miachel/Mickael/Weichel, who remarried to John Tolbert.
