JOHN H. NORTON
John Hunter Norton was born 23 Nov 1830 in Randolph Co., Indiana. He was the son of William Norton, born 2 May 1796 in North Carolina, died 18 Aug 1862 Randolph Co., Indiana. They came to Indiana prior to 1820, probably from Richmond Co., NC, and settled in Greensfork Twp., Randolph Co., on an eighty acre land grant. Both are buried in the Old Lost Hopewell Cemetery on the Randolph-Wayne County line. They were the parents of ten children: Elias R.; Samuel S.; William; Malinda; John H.; Joe S.; Elijah C.; Robert P.; Elizabeth Jane; and Mary Ellen.
John H. Norton married Zilpha Ann Hinshaw, daughter of Abel and Nancy Bookout Hinshaw, 24 Jun 1853 in Randolph Co., Indiana. Zilpha Ann Hinshaw was born 2 Dec 1834 in Randolph Co. The Hinshaws were natives of Randolph County, North Carolina having come to Indiana around 1830. They were Quakers and had eleven children; Absalom; John A.; Jacob; Thomas; Silas; Elizabeth; Zilpha A.; Mary; Abel; Elkanah; and Greenbury.
John Norton sold his property in Randolph County and on 7 Oct 1874 moved to Greene Twp., Jay Co. The Nortons had six children all born in Randolph County; Myrl H., born 7 June 1854, married first in Jay Co. 24 Aug 1878 Phoebe Phillips, second Blackford Co.; 1 Nov 1890 Charlotte Fensel, died 25 Mar 1916 Blackford Co.; William W., born 27 Dec 1856, married Jay Co. 6 Feb 1881 Isabelle Phillips, died 7 Nov 1936 Montpelier; John E., born 30 Jan 1859, married Jay Co. 4 Aug 1881 Eliza M. Craig; Aladon Arlindo, born 22 Feb 1861, married Jay Co. 6 Jan 1863 Nancy Winner; Samuel S., born 10 July 1862, married Blackford Co. 2 Dec 1886 Alice Lavina Smith, died 2 Sep 1832 Montpelier; Mary Elizabeth, born 7 Oct 1867, married Jay Co. 18 Oct 1888 David Gideon Kesler, died 1 Jul 1845 Jay Co.
Zilpha Norton died 10 Aug 1879. John Norton died 13 Apr 1899 in Blackford County. Both are buried at Twin Hills I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Pennville.
Most, if not all, of the Nortons living in Blackford County today are descendants of this family.
