On Jun 5 1917 Asa B. Hinshaw, age 30, registered for the World War I draft in Marion County, Indiana. He declared he was born Dec 27 1886 in Carmel, Indiana, and was then residing in Nora, Indiana, a self-employed country grain dealer: "Hinshaw Elevator Co." of Nora, Marion County, Indiana. He declared he was married with two children, and had two years previous military experience as an artillery private in the National Guard of Indiana. He claimed an exemption due to "support of family also Quaker". He was recorded as medium height, stout, blue eyes, dark brown hair.7
Asa Benton Hinshaw died Dec 17 1917, buried Old Carmel Cemetery, Hamilton County, Indiana.1,8 Asa was killed at age 31 in a car-train crash at the Broad Ripple Monon crossing.1 Gertrude did not marry again.1
