Hezekiah Hanshaw7 [Hezekiah Handshaw2, Hezekiah Henshaw8].
Born about 1817, Virginia.2,4,5
He married Jane Kern, Jan 22 1846, Wayne County, Indiana.8,9 (Indexed as Hezekiah Henshaw & Jane Kern in one marriage index,8 and Hezekiah Kinshaw & Jane Kem in another marriage index).9
Jane might have died sometime before 1850 as Hezekiah was shown living separately in the 1850 census.1 However it's possible they were divorced/separated before 1850, as an unidentified Mary Henshaw was shown in the 1850 census living in the household of a Joseph Kern in Wayne County, Indiana - see: (unknown) Henshaw #9300.
Hezekiah Hanshaw was shown in the 1850 census (Nov 27 1850), German Township, Darke County, Ohio:1
Heisikiah Hanshaw, age 33, born in Virginia; farmer; $900 real estate.
It is unknown why daughter Mary was not enumerated in the 1850 census, but it is possible that maybe she had been placed with another family temporarily.10
Living two farms away in 1850 was the family of Benjamin & Susanah Hanshaw11 (probably Hezekiah's parents).10
He then married Johanna Thompson2,12 [Johanna Randolph13], Oct 3 18512,12, Darke County, Ohio2,12. Johanna was born Nov - 1826, Ohio.2,3,6 (Virginia).13
In 1855 Hezekiah Hanshaw, a native of Virginia, settled in North Palmyra Township, Macoupin County, Illinois.7
Hezekiah and family were shown in the 1860 census (Aug 10 1860), Palmyra, Macoupin County, Illinois:2
Hezekiah Handshaw, age 43, born in Virginia; miller; $3500 real estate; $300 personal property.
Johanna Handshaw, age 33, born in Ohio.
Living very nearby in 1860 was an unidentified John Y. Henshaw (age 18, born in Illinois), who was living in the household of an A.C. & Martha Henlsey14 (as thought John might have been a hired laborer). It is unknown if/how John might have been related to Hezekiah.
On Oct 4 1865 an H.B. Hanshaw (probably Hezekiah) was recorded as a charter member of the newly organized Macoupin County Masonic Lodge (Scottville Lodge No. 426, A. F. & A. M.).15
Hezekiah and family were shown in the 1870 census (Jun 5 1870), Palmyra, Macoupin County, Illinois:4
Hanshaw, Hez'k, age 52, born in Virginia; farmer; $12,000 real estate; $2,000 personal property.
Hanshaw, Joanna, age 43, born in Ohio; keeping house.
Living next door in 1870 was the family of Jacob Hanshaw, with his apparently-widowed father, Benjamin Hanshaw16 (probably Hezekiah's father also).10
Hezekiah and family were shown in the 1880 census (Jun 11-12 1880), Central Township, Barton County, Missouri:5
Hanshaw, Hezikiah, age 63, born in Virginia; parents born in Pennsylvania; farmer.
Hanshaw, Johnana, wife, age 53, born in Ohio; parents born in New Jersey; keeping house.
Hanshaw, Joseph, son, age 21, born in Illinois; father born in Virginia; mother born in Ohio; farmer.
Hanshaw, James, son, age 19, born in Illinois; father born in Virginia; mother born in Ohio; dentist apprentice.
Hanshaw, George, son, age 17, born in Illinois; father born in Virginia; mother born in Ohio; attended school.
Hanshaw, Francis, son, age 11, born in Illinois; father born in Virginia; mother born in Ohio; attended school.
Hezekiah Hanshaw died before Jun 5 1900.6
Widow Joanna was shown in the 1900 census (Jun 5 1900), living in the household of son James in Central Township, Barton County, Missouri:6
Hanshaw, Joanna, mother, age 73, born Nov 1826 in Ohio; father born in Virginia; mother born in Maryland; widow; 7 children, 4 living.
Widow Joanna was shown in the 1910 census (Jun 22-23 1910), living in the household of step-daughter Mary Susan in Central Township, Barton County, Missouri:3
Hanshaw, Johanna, mother-in-law, age 83, born in Ohio; parents born in U.S.; widow; 8 children, 2 living.
Living nearby in 1910 was the family of son James;17 also nearby in 1910 was the family of granddaughter Kate Hanshaw.18
