At Honey Creek MM on 3-19-1877, Jesse H., John A., and Rhilda R. [sic] Hinshaw, minors, were granted a certificate to Center MM, Iowa.4
In addition to a public school education, John also attended the Newton (Iowa) Academy.1
After leaving school John worked out by the month until about age thirty, meanwhile spending one year in Kansas.1
He married Cynthia Arwilda (Janeway) Cox1,3 [Cynthia Arwilda Janeway3,11, Arwilda Janeway3,4], Mar 2 18941,3, Jasper County, Iowa1,3. Cynthia, daughter of Seth Janeway & Susannah E. Pickering, was born May 29 1865, Jasper County, Iowa.2,3,5,6,7,11,12
Arwilda was a widow with one son, Ernest C. Cox1 (Jan 24 1888 - May 22 1970).13 She had previously married Oct 12 1886 to Oliver Cox.2
At Center MM (Iowa) on 12-15-1894, Arwilda & son Ernest Cox were received on a certificate from Kellog MM, Iowa.4
In 1894 [sic] John removed to Colorado and rented farm land.1
At Center MM (Iowa) on 8-19-1899, J. A. Hinshaw & wife Arwilda and children Ernest Cox, Huldah, & Agnes were granted a certificate to Ramona MM, Calif.4 Note that the date recorded for this certificate must be in error (either in the original meeting books or in the abstracts), as daughter Agnes died in 1898 and her death was recorded in Ramona MM minutes.3 It is more likely this certificate was granted in 1897 (probably 8-19-1897).
John moved to California, arriving at Ramona, San Diego County, on November 8, 1897.1 He arrived with less than $100 with which to begin, but he later was able to purchase fifty acres where he made his home. This later grew to more than 500 acres of crop land, in addition to considerable pasture land.1
At Ramona MM on 6-2-1900, John A. Hinshaw, wife Arwilda J., children Ernest Cox, Hulda and Agnes were received on a certificate from Center MM, Iowa.3 Note that daughter Agnes was mentioned in this minute even though she had died in 1898 (which was also recorded at Ramona MM).
