David was a field representative in Theodore Roosevelt's Bull Moose party;20 later a member of the Roosevelt Memorial Association.21  On Jan 6 1934, at the 14th anniversary of Theodore Roosevelt's death, David read aloud, to an audience of almost 100, the address Roosevelt had made before the Ohio constitutional convention of 1912.21  David was awarded the Theodore Roosevelt Medal, one of three to receive this medal, the others being Lucius D. Clay and J. Edgar Hoover.3  

In 1908 David graduated from Westtown School, a Quaker boarding school in Chester County, Pennsylvania.  In 1929 he wrote a book, "Westtown Revisited", about his memories of his time at Westtown.19  

On Sep 11 1914 David S. Hinshaw was issued a U.S. passport.  He declared he was born November 4 1883 in Emporia, Kansas, and his father was a natural born citizen of the United States.  David declared he was then residing in Emporia, Kansas, occupied with "Publicity work".  He was recorded as age 31, 5' 9 1/2" tall, light blue eyes, blonde hair, round face, fair complexion, prominent chin, "fairly prominent" nose.16  

He married Augusta Clendening Wiggam1,2,3,10, Jun 1 19161,2,3,10 [Jul 1 191622], Paoli, Chester County, Pennsylvania1,2,3,10 [Mt. Kisco, New York22].  Augusta, daughter of John Howard Wiggam & Mary Virginia "Jennie" Berkshire, was born Apr 13 1887, North Vernon, Jennings County, Indiana.2,4,5,23  

In 1910-1911 Miss Augusta Wiggam had been an English teacher at Topeka High School in Topeka, Kansas.17,24  

On Sep 12 1918 David Scull Hinshaw, age 35, registered for the World War I draft in Manhattan, New York City.  He declared he was born Nov 4 1882 and he was then residing at 125 E. 24th, New York, New York.  He declared his nearest relative was his wife, Augusta W. Hinshaw of the same address.  He was recorded as medium height, medium build, blue eyes, black hair.13

Hinshaw, age 59, registered for the World War II draft in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He declared he was born 11 mo. 4th day 82 in Emporia, Kansas, and was then residing in West Goshen Township, Chester [county], Pennsylvania, "Proprietor of own business", "Writer and Farmer".  He declared his relative/contact was Augusta Hinshaw of West Goshen Township.  He was recorded as 5'4¼" tall, 130 lbs., gray eyes, brown hair, light complexion, and "Scar on right leg below knee" and "Scar on right palm".15  

On Aug 13 1944 David and Augusta arrived at San Juan, Puerto Rico on Pan American Airways, bound for the Dominican Republic, having departed from Miami, Florida:25

Police said he apparently suffered a heart attack while driving toward his home at nearby Paoli, and collapsed after alighting from the machine to summon help.

David's obituary was published in "The Progress" (Clearfield, Pennsylvania) on Saturday, November 7, 1953:20

A native of Emporia, Kan., Hinshaw graduated from Haverford (Pa.) College.  His political career started in 1912 when he became a field representative of the late President Theodore Roosevelt's Bull Moose party.  

He was a noted biographer of Hoover and the late William Allen White.

David's obituary was also published in "The American Friend" on February 25, 1954 (page 63).29
