He married Elizabeth "Bessie" Early.1,6  Elizabeth "Bessie" Early, daughter of Thomas Whitfield Early & Laura Hudson, was born about 1881, Virginia.1,6  (c1883).2  

Joseph and Bessie were first cousins once removed (through Bessie's grandmother, Patsey N. Henshaw), and also second cousins once removed (through Bessie's grandfather, Richard T. Early).  Note that Joseph's brother Edmund Henshaw married Bessie's sister Nina Jane Early.
