George's birth was recorded in the 1888 birth record book of the city of Boston, Massachusetts, with the place of birth recorded as Rochester, N.Y.7,15  (his parents were recorded as residents of Boston at that time).7,15  His birth was recorded as George Matthew Henshaw, son of Thomas & Catharine Henshaw,7,15 but in later records he seems to have adopted the name John.  

On Jun 5 1917 George M. Henshaw, age 28, registered for the World War I draft in Rochester, New York.  He declared he was born August 11 1888 in Rochester, New York, and was then residing at 31 Adams St. in Rochester, employed as "assistant station master" with the New York Central R.R.  He declared he was single, with dependent mother and grandmother.  He claimed an exemption due to "mother and grandmother".  He was recorded as tall, slender, blue eyes, brown hair.10  

He married Florence V. Boyle, 1921, Rochester, Monroe County, New York.8  Florence was born about 1896, New York.2  (c1894).1,4
