Mildred always called herself (in her adult life at least) Mildred Hinshaw Jones.    She intensely disliked the name Minnie and that name was never used in any public records, with the possible exception of her birth certificate, which was lost in a fire in the courhouse in Plentywood, Montana.f

PEKIN -- Mildred H. Jones, 90, of 1632 Melanie Place died at 12:20 a.m. Sunday, June 27, 1999, at Pekin Hospital.    Born Sept. 17, 1908, in Crosby, N.D., to Edward and Lona Plunkett Hinshaw, she married Larston C. Jones on Aug. 13, 1927, in Elkhart, Ind.    He died on Jan. 29, 1962.    She also was preceded in death by three sisters.    Surviving are one daughter, Wanda VanDettum of Pekin; two sons, James of Pekin and David of Denver; one sister, Eva Hantover of Austin, Texas; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.    She was a schoolteacher in Tazewell County for 30 years, retiring from Tremont Grade School in 1974.    She was a member of the Illinois State Alumni Association and the Theta chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Teachers Sorority and past president of the Tazewell County Retired Teacher's Association.    She was a 62-year member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Pekin.    Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at her church, where visitation will be one hour before services.    The Rev. Dwight Borden will officiate.    Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens.    Noel- Henderson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.    Memorials may be made to her church.

Mildred Hinshaw was born on September 17, 1908 in Crosby N.D.    Her family moved to a homestead near Westby, MT. in 1913.    On her 10th birthday, the Ed Hinshaw family moved back to their former home in Danvers, IL.    She graduated from Sibley H.S. in Sibley, IL in 1926 and attended Illinois State Normal University for one year. Mildred married Larston C. Jones of Elliot, IL on August 13, 1927, in Elkhart, Indiana.    He died on January 29, 1962.    As an early working mother, she was a schoolteacher in Tazewell County, IL for 30 years.    She taught grades 1-8 in two different one-room schools prior to moving on to teaching 2nd grade in conventional public schools in the mid 1950's.    She returned to and graduated from ISNU in 1963 at age 54.    She was an avid reader and traveler and at age 90, her mind was still sharp, enjoying crossword puzzles and attending annual Hinshaw family reunions.    She died on June 27, 1999 of congestive heart failure.
