Born 1831, Preston County, Virginia.1,2,3  

James lived at Independence, West Virginia.  Little else is known about his life.3  

James E. Hanshaw died Oct 16 1870.3  

James' death was noted in the "Preston County Journal" on Saturday, October 22, 1870:3

KILLED ON THE RAILROAD. -- On Sunday morning last Jas Handshaw of Independence, was instantly killed by the Cincinnati Express.  He had driven a hog from the track and was in the act of mounting the platform at the station when he was struck by the train, throwing him under the cars and mangling him in a shocking manner.

James is thought to have been one of two brothers who, along with their father, were killed on the railroad.3  

This might be the same as James Henshaw #7059.4
