During World War II Bill served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Intrepid.7  

He married Bernice Irene Steelhammer, Jan 1 1950, Dallas, Polk County, Oregon.1,8,9  Bernice, daughter of Dr. Henry William Steelhammer & Blanche D'Armond8,10,11,12,13 [Henry William Steelhammer & Blanche Mirim McKinney14], was born Apr 16 19218,10,11,12,13, Oregon City, Clackamas County, Oregon8,10,11,12,13.  

Bernice had been previously married to Thomas Heber Radcliffe, Dec 20 1941, Portland, Oregon.15  

William Swan Hinshaw died Jun 27 1983, Walla Walla, Washington; age 61.5,8,16  

Bernice died Jun 6 2011, Oregon City, Clackamas County, Oregon; age 90.8,12,16  

Bernice's obituary was published in the "News-Review" (Roseburg, Douglas County, Oregon) on June 17, 2011:8,16

Bernice Irene Steelhammer Hinshaw

Age 90, passed away in Oregon City, Oregon.  She was born to parents, Dr. Henry Wm. Steelhammer and Blanche D'Armond Steelhammer.  She was married her [sic] first husband after his college graduation.  Two daughters were born to this union: Kathleen and Ruth.  On January 1, 1950, in Dallas, Oregon, Bernice married her second husband, Wm. S. Hinshaw.  Three children were born to this union, Carolyn, Rebecca and William R.  Bernice graduated from Grant High School in Portland, Oregon, and Southern Oregon State College in Ashland, Oregon.  She taught school in various Oregon Schools including Glide, Oregon.  

Bernice belonged to the Episcopal Church.  She was a lifetime member of Amaranth.  She enjoyed and supported community events.  When her children were young she was actively involved in Blue Birds.  Campfire Girls and Cub Scouts.  

Bernice easily made and kept friends.  She was still in contact with friends from high school and college until death.  Bernice's family appreciated and benefited from her talents as a seamstress and her wonderful baking skills.  She made many beautiful knit sweaters and quilts.  She was a talented artist.  

Those who knew Bernice appreciated her generous spirit and her great sense of humor.  

She is preceded in death by husband, Wm S. Hinshaw whom died in June 1983.  

She is survived by son, Wm. R. Hinshaw of Milton-Freewater, Oregon; daughters, Kathleen (Steve) Straughan of Shady Cove, Oregon; Ruth (John) Denny of Roseburg, Oregon; Carolyn (Mark) Walrey of Walla Walla, Washington; Rebecca (Dusty) Finnell of Beavercreek, Oregon; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
