6 Die in Crash Near Morrow County

Auto Burns
In Collision
With Truck

5 Trapped Inside;
Cleveland Family
On Vacation Trip

Six persons were killed instantly this morning in a head-on truck-auto collision on Route 42, one mile south of Lexington in Richland County, the Associated Press reported.

The crash took place two and one-half miles north of the Morrow County line at 6:30.

The state highway patrol at Mansfield identified the dead as Robert Carmen Turner, 47, of Cleveland; his wife Laura, 44; two daughters, Barbara, 14, and Joyce Lee, 11; a son, Robert James, 5; and Mrs. Grace Williams, 29, a sister of Mrs. Turner.

They met death only two and one-half hours after leaving for a vacation trip to Georgia.

Driver of the tractor-trailer truck was Graydon Hinshaw, 42, of Avon Lake, O.  He is confined to Mansfield General Hospital where he is suffering from scalp lacerations, leg abrasions and shock.  His condition is not believed to be serious.

Cause Not Determined

Patrolmen were unable to determine the cause of the accident.  The mishap occurred on a straight stretch of the highway.

The Turner car overturned after the crash and caught fire when the gasoline tank exploded.  The body of Mrs. Turner was thrown through the windshield, according to the patrol.  She was decapitated.  The five other persons were trapped inside car [sic] and authorities were unable to reach the bodies until the fire was extinguished more than an hour later.  One authority said death probably was instantaneous before the gasoline explosion.  The tank exploded after the car had plunged into the ditch and overturned.

The trailer was torn loose from the tractor and overturned.  The tractor remained upright and did not burn.

Patrolman Lucas said the names of the dead were found through the Cleveland Police Department after a check of the license plate on the auto.

Cleveland police told patrolmen at Mansfield the Turner family had left the city at 4 a.m. today.  They were on their way to Blue Ridge, Ga., to visit relatives there.  Three other sons, Horace, Howard and Harry, remained in Cleveland.

Mansfield authorities said today the area had been the scene of several serious accidents in the past years.  They said today's collision was the worst single accident in Richland County for several years.
