Vera Jeane Hinshaw
April 11, 1925 - September 1, 2013

Vera Tyner Hinshaw 88, a life long resident of Carmel passed away peacefully September 1, 2013 at the Forum under the loving care of St. Vincent Hospice.  Born April 11,1925 in Nora, she was the daughter of Lora E. Tyner and Carrie L. Haverstick.  Both parents were from Indiana pioneering families, some settling in Marion and Hamilton counties as early as the 1820s.  She graduated from Carmel High School in 1942 and attended Butler University until she went to work at the Naval Ordnance Plant in Indianapolis.  She wanted to be part of the WW II effort and was proud of her work helping make the top secret Norden bombsights.  On July 29,1944 she married 2nd Lt. Charles Franklin Hinshaw of Carmel and they had four children.

In 1954 she was the first woman hired to work as a rural route mail carrier at the Carmel Post Office.  After retiring in 1983, she wintered in Sarasota, Florida, enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family.  She was well known for her beautiful flower gardens and loved giving friends and family starts from her plants.  She was also well known for her determination.  In 1998 she prevailed in Hinshaw vs AT&T, as the lead plaintiff in a class-action lawsuit protecting rightful property owners of abandoned railway easements from companies illegally lying fiber-optic lines without permission or compensation to the landowners.  Her name is recorded in class action law and is now well known across the country.

She is survived by her four children, Les Hinshaw (Helen McLaughlin) of Cadillac, Michigan, Tom Hinshaw (Kathy Frontz) of Indianapolis, Jeff Hinshaw (Marilyn Zook) of Fowler, and daughter Judy Singleton (Jim) of Indianapolis, and 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Friday morning at Union Chapel Methodist Church, 2720 E 86th St Indianapolis, IN 46240.  Visitation from 9:30-11:00 a.m. and Celebration of Life service at 11:00 a.m.  She will be buried in Union Chapel Cemetery immediately following the service.  Memorial contributions can be sent in her honor to Union Chapel Methodist Church, where five generations of family have been members.
