He declared he was born July 29 1887 in Randleman, North Carolina, was single, and a self-employed farmer in Randolph County, North Carolina. He was recorded as medium height, slender, dark brown eyes, black hair.⁵

Roby was shown in the 1930 census (Apr 2 1930), living with the family of brother Lester in Tabernacle Township, Randolph County, North Carolina:²

Roby's death was noted in the "High Point Enterprise" (High Point, Guilford County, North Carolina) on Thursday, January 25, 1968 (page 10B):⁹
