Murl/Merle apparently changed his name to Ostertag when his mother remarried.  

He married Virginia Case6 [Virginia Ollie Case1,3], Nov 28 19426, St. Louis, Missouri6.  Virginia, daughter of William + Ollie Case2,3, was born Mar 2 19242,3 [Mar 1 19245], St. Louis, Missouri2,3.

Merle Glen Hanshaw died Dec 24 1990, buried Crossroads Baptist Church Cemetery, Leasburg, Crawford County, Missouri.2,5  

Virginia died Aug 12 2007, Cuba, Crawford County, Missouri; age 83y 5m 10d.2,3,5  

Virginia's obituary was published as follows:3

Virginia Ollie Ostertag, loving Christian mother and grandmother, departed this world on August 12, 2007 at the age of 83 years 5 months and 10 days.  She was born March 2, 1924 to William and Ollie Case in St. Louis, Missouri.  She was married to Murl Ostertag in 1942.  She was an accomplished typist, pianist, gardener and writer.  Virginia worked at a U.S. Naval Station Hospital at San Leandro, California.  She was an executive secretary of Dauhters of Charity and later for Sister of Mercy in St. Louis, Missouri.  She was an executive secretary to the V.P. of United Van Lines in Fenton, Missouri.  When she moved to the country, she was a secretary to the professor of Liberal Arts at University of Missouri, Rolla, which she retired from.  In the 1990's she was instrumental in getting Leasburg Ministerial Benevolence, "LAMB" started and worked with this for several years.  She always had a place in her heart for the less fortunate in her community.  She was a member of the Rolla Area Writers Club and was published in "The Anthology 2004".  She was a member of the Methodist Church and was an organist for many years for the Baptist Church in Leasburg and later, the Methodist Church of Bourbon, Missouri.  She was Mrs. Claus with her husband, Murl being Santa Claus at Boy Scouts and numerous community Christmas events.  She will be dearly missed by her sons, Larry and wife Audrey Ostertag of St. James, Missouri and Randy and wife Rachel Ostertag of St. Louis, Missouri; one sister, Marjorie Factor of Delaware, Ohio; grandchildren, Larry and wife Amanda of St. James, Missouri Kyle and wife Terri of Olathe, Kansas and Beth Sanders of St. James, Missouri; great grandchildren, Brandon and Matthew of St. James, Missouri, Emma and Bryson of Olathe, Kansas and Crystal, Caitlynn and Christopher of St. James, Missouri, many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Murl in 1990 and her parents.  Visitation will be held Thursday, August 16, 2007 from 5-8 p.m. at Britton Funeral Home of Cuba.  Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 17, 2007 with Rev. Leo Shumaker officiating.  Special music for the service will be "Amazing Grace" and "I Am Resolved" provided by Darlene Cape.  Burial at Crossroads Baptist Cemetery in Leasburg, Missouri.  The Britton Funeral Home of Cuba is honored to be serving the Ostertag family.

Note than in his marriage license application Murl declared his father was a Henry Ostertag (who also signed the license application).6  See scan below.
