MT. VERNON -- Pauline H. Norton, 92, of Mt. Vernon passed away 7:08 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor. Mrs. Norton was born Nov. 12, 1919, in Girard, Kan., the daughter of Regnald V. and Iza (Hays) Hanshaw. She married Alfred H. Norton Sr. on Oct. 4, 1943, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 3, 1990.
Prior to her extended illness Mrs. Norton was an avid golfer and a long time member of the Lady Elks golf club in Salina, Kan. She enjoyed playing bridge and was a member in two different bridge clubs. She was an active member of the Sunrise Presbyterian Church in Salina, Kan., and their weekly women's circle. She did it all, Cub Scout den mother, Girl Scout leader and PTA activities. In addition to these extra curricular activities she unwaveringly devoted herself to her full time vocation as a loving and selfless mother and wife.
Mrs. Norton is survived by her two sons, David Norton and wife Sherry of Mt. Vernon and Hal Norton and wife Ellen of Poway, Calif., a daughter, Carol Bailey and husband Doug of Seattle, Wash.; a sister, Margaret Townsend of Farlington, Kan.; a brother, Keith Hanshaw of Augusta, Kan.; four grandchildren, Kelly, Ryan, Christopher and Mathew; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Norton was preceded in death by her husband; infant daughter, Gwendolyn; one brother, Dean; and her parents.
Interment will be in Girard Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials in Mrs. Norton's honor may be made to the Jefferson County Animal Control Adopt a Pet Program and will be accepted at the Johnston Funeral Home, 122 N. 10th St., Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
Johnston Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon is in charge of local arrangements.
