Return from West

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Stransky have returned to their home in Riverside after passing four months in California visiting their daughter, Mrs. Harry Henshaw and family in San Francisco, and Mrs. Stransky's brother, August Thomann, in Oakland.  One thing marred their visit.  Mr. Stransky was seriously ill for several weeks but is now completely recovered and feeling fine.

While there they visited the Golden Gate Exposition on Treasure Island and report that what has been said about the beauty of the exposition is no exaggeration.  Another impressive sight, according to the Stranskys, is the Golden Gate bridge with its long suspension span.

Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Stransky, accompanied by the former's sister, Mrs. Dorothy Henshaw, of San Francisco, Calif., were visitors in Davenport with their sister, Sister Mary Magdalen, at Mercy hospital.  Sister Mary Magdalen was formerly Miss Irene Stransky of Riverside.

Riverside -- Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Stransky of Riverside, above, will observe their golden wedding anniversary Monday.  Dinner will be served at noon at the home of their son, Alvin, on the Stransky homestead, southwest of Riverside.  The immediate members of the family will be present.  Mr. and Mrs. Stransky are among the pioneer families of this vicinity and have passed their entire lives here.

Joseph Stransky and Miss Mary P. Thomann were married in St. Mary's church in Riverside on October 20, 1891.  The pastor, Rev. A. J. Drexler, now of Dubuque, was the officiating clergyman.  Following their marriage they went to housekeeping on a farm two miles southwest of Riverside which was their home until 21 years ago when they moved to Riverside where they have since resided.

Mr. Stransky is 74 years of age, a son of the late Wenzel and Mary Stransky.  He was born April 6, 1867, on a farm southwest of Riverside and is one of a family of five children.  He and his sister, Mrs. Josephine Thon, of Healy, Kan., are the only ones living.  Mrs. Stransky was the former Miss Mary Phillippine Thomann and is 73 years old.  She was born November 13, 1867, on a farm near Riverside, the daughter of Mathias and Marguerite Thomann.  She is the only daughter in a family of nine children.

Mr. and Mrs. Stransky are the parents of four children, all of whom will be present for the celebration Monday.  They are Sister Mary Magdalen of Mercy hospital, Davenport; Mrs. Dorothy Henshaw, of San Francisco, Calif.; Mrs. Eva Fjetland, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Alvin Stransky of Riverside.  In the family circle are eight grandchildren, Mary Fjetland, Elaine, Rita, Patricia, Dorothy and Dwayne Stransky and Jackie and Victor Henshaw.

Mr. and Mrs. Stransky are members of the local St. Mary's church and Mrs. Stransky belongs to the Rosary society of the parish.

Riverside Personals

Mrs. Dorothy Henshaw and sons, Jack and Victor, of San Francisco, Calif., accompanied Mrs. Eva Fjetland to her home in Cincinnati, Ohio, where they will visit.  They will also visit in Chicago, then will take the southern route to their home in California.  Mrs. Henshaw and sons and Mrs. Fjetland were visiting here with relatives and attended the golden wedding anniversary celebration of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Stransky on October 20.

When fairly young Harry was a piano salesman.  The shop he worked for would put a small portable piano out on the street, and Harry would play it to entice customers.  He could play anything he'd ever heard.  He could go to a brand new show and come home and play the entire score on the piano.  He never learned to read music.  His sons never got to hear him play, as they couldn't afford a piano.10

Harry Forrest Henshaw died Nov 7 1964, San Francisco County, California; age 82.7

Dorothy died Jan 1 1987, Solano County, California; age 91.7,9
