Born 1763, Virginia.4  

Nicholas grew up near Winchester, Virginia.4  

He served in the Revolutionary War.6  

In 1789, at the age of 26, Nicholas left the Shenandoah valley and patented 255 acres of land in North Union township (then Readstone township), Fayette County, Pennsylvania.  There he cleared a farm and lived there for the rest of his life.4  

He married Margaret McConnel.4,7  Margaret was born 1753, Virginia.1,4  

Note that Nicholas' brother Levi married Ann McConnell,4,8,9 and his other brother Hiram married Mary McConnell4,8,9,10,11 (sisters??).  [and also: a James Henshaw married a Margaret McConnell in 1818].  

Nicholas and family were shown in the 1790 census, Bullskin Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania:12

1 free white male age 16 or older (Nicholas).
1 free white male under age 16 (William).
4 free white females (Margaret, plus daughters Nancy Ann and two unidentified).
Also living in the same area in 1790 was an unidentified James Henshaw.12  

Nicholas Hanshaw was shown in the "Account Book" of Beesontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania on Aug 8, Aug 18, Sep 2,13 and Nov 2, 1795.14  

Nicholas and family were again shown in the 1800 census, Union Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania:15

Hanshaw, Nicholas household:
1 free white male age 10-15 (William).
1 free white male age 26-44 (Nicholas).
1 free white female age 16-25 (Nancy Ann).
1 free white female age 26-44 (unidentified).
1 free white female age 45 or older (Margaret).
Also living in the same area in 1800 was the same unidentified James Henshaw.16  

Margaret died Feb 14 1810, age 57 years.1,4,17  

Nicholas and family were again shown in the 1810 census, Union Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania:18

Living next door (or in the same dwelling) in 1810 was son William.18  Also living nearby in 1810 was the same unidentified James Henshaw.19  

Nicholas Henshaw died Feb 23 1821, buried Laurel Hill Cemetery / First Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Laurel Hills, near Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.1,4,5,6,17,20  

Nicholas had written his will Jan 5 1818; it was probated Mar 17 1821 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.2  In his will he named:2

William Handshaw;
children of my daughter Mary Stockdale deceased, two females at 18, two males at 21;
daughters Nancy, Rebecca;
grandson Nicholas at 21;
granddaughters Margaret Better, Margaret Reed;
witnesses Doc. Daniel Sturgeon, Morris Morris
executors William Handshaw, D. Ewing, Morris Morris (renounced 3-17-1821)
