Mrs. C.F. Henshaw

Died at her home in the village of Patterson, at 7:20 o'clock Friday evening July 11, 1906, Cynthia Frances Henshaw, aged 78 years, 1 month and 6 days.

She was a daughter of William and Asenath Patterson, and was born in St. Louis county, Mo., June 5, 1828, where she grew to womanhood and resided until she was nearly forty years of age.

On the 28th day of March 1846 she was united in marriage with Hugh L. Henshaw.  His death occurred November 25, 1861, and to her was left the care of their five children, the eldest of whom was only fourteen years of age.

In September 1867, six years after the death of her husband she moved with her children from St. Louis county, Mo., to Patterson, where she continued to reside until her death.  No woman has ever shown greater devotion to her children.  There was no sacrifice too great for her to make for her children.  No woman was more highly esteemed in the community in which she lived.  She was regarded by all who knew her as a noble character, a woman whose life was full of good deeds.

Her surviving children are Thomas Henshaw of Carrollton; Creighton A. Henshaw, living west of White Hall; and Virginia Henshaw who has always made her home with her mother.  Winona and Laura, the two younger children of the family died more than 25 years ago.  Of a family of five brothers and four sisters only one sister is living, Mrs. Lydia Veale of Barton county, Mo.  A large number of nephews and nieces survive her.

Funeral services will be held at the Patterson church tomorrow, Friday, at 11 o'clock a.m.  The interment will be in the Martin cemetery, east of Patterson.

A biographical sketch of son Thomas was published in the 1905 book "Past and Present of Greene County Illinois", and included the following about Hugh Lyle Henshaw:6

After arriving at years of maturity he went to Missouri, the date of his removal being 1845, and he continued a resident of St. Louis county until his death, which occurred on the 25th of November, 1861, resulting from the kick of one of his horses.  He followed the occupation of farming throughout his business career.  He married Miss Fanny Patterson, a native of St. Louis county and they became the parents of seven children.
