Courier photographer garners award

PRESCOTT VALLEY - The Daily Courier's newest photographer has caught the eye of the Associated Press.

Photographer Matt Hinshaw won the Arizona award for the AP's photo of the month for April.

Hinshaw is getting $150 for his photo of a woman protesting the war in Iraq at the rally for Republican presidential nominee John McCain at the Yavapai County courthouse steps April 5.

The photo shows the woman holding a poster of a crying infant with a plume of black smoke in the background.

Matt Stewart, a supervisor at the AP's photo desk in New York, said he and a small group of editors gather monthly to select a winner out of photos the AP picks up or that members submit each month.

Stewart said they chose Hinshaw's photo out of a group of 13 other pictures from Arizona members.

"It's just a nice picture - he was paying attention," he said.  "This photographer was awake, was paying attention to the crowd as well as the speaker."

Hinshaw, 26, joined the Courier's photography staff from The Gallup Independent Newspaper in New Mexico in November 2007.

"I was just shooting as much as I could to convey the atmosphere of the rally," he said.  "She was one of the people attending that was doing something different."

The picture is one of 23 shots Hinshaw took and posted online.

"It was a nice gesture," he said.  "I'm going to keep pushing to document people in the community through my photographs."

Courier Photography Editor Les Stukenberg praised Hinshaw for his work that day.

"This is well-deserved recognition," he said.  "For this particular assignment, he was on his own when other newspapers sent multiple photographers and he outshot them all."
