Mattie's obituary was published in the "Charlotte Observer" (Charlotte, North Carolina) on November 15, 1920:1
MRS. MATTIE SEVERS DIES FOLLOWING LONG ILLNESS
Following an illness of five years, Mrs. Mattie Hinshaw Severs, widow of William W. Severs, died at her home in Seversville yesterday afternoon at 6 o'clock.
The funeral will be conducted this afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home, 49 Severs avenue, by Rev. W. T. Pearman, pastor of Seversville Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. John E. Wool, pastor of Pegram Street Presbyterian church. Pall-bearers will be the nephews of Mrs. Severs.
Mrs. Severs was nearly 60 years of age, having been born March 6, 1856. Her husband died 16 years ago. She is survived by the following children: Charles F. Severs, Petersburg, Va.; Mrs. J. L. Query, Portsmuth, Va.; Mrs. E. C. Todd, Mrs. T. E. Wingate, Herman W. Severs, all of Charlotte.
She is also survived by one brother, J. W. Hinshaw, of Charlotte, and two sisters, Mrs. Frank Walsner and Mrs. R. O. Robinson, of Charlotte. Fifteen grandchildren also survive.
