Hugh removed to Meadville, Linn County, Missouri.3,5 According to family folklore, Hugh and his father could not agree, so Hugh left home to seek his fortune in "the west" (Missouri). He sent home for some pine cones to plant and these were gathered and sent to him by Ellen Stout Brown, stepdaughter of his sister Hannah3 (Ellen Stout Brown was alive in 1947 at age 94).3 Hugh's mother also sent him a feather bed which his neighbors said was the heaviest they had ever seen.3
