One of Jessie's grandsons described her hearth seething with the sugary smell of sweet potatoes. He said she would reach into the coals and pull one bursting with brown caramel and say, "Would you like to have one of Grandma's sweet potatoes?". Once when witnessing a hurried cleaning of a child's dirty face with a cold wash cloth, he said, "You know I used to hate the way Ma would take a cold rag and just screw my face off like that. My grandmother would go to the wood stove and dip her cloth in a pan of warm water. Then she would take the soft cloth and gently wash my face."⁸
