May 23, 1919 - Jan. 27, 2004Helen H. Werner of Boulder died of natural causes Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, in Louisville. She was 84.
The daughter of Charles B. Hinchey and Mildred H. Matthews Hinchey, she was born May 23, 1919, in Salmon, Idaho. She married Daniel G. Werner on Nov. 27, 1941, in Hailey, Idaho.
Mrs. Werner was a former resident of Idaho who moved to Boulder County four years ago to be near her daughters.
She received a bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctorate from the University of Idaho in Moscow.
She was a teacher, principal and superintendent, and retired as the deputy state superintendent of public instruction for Idaho.
She was a member of the Worthy Matron of Kamiah Chapter No. 45 and the Order of Eastern Star in Kamiah, Idaho, and was past president of Boise Soroptimists. She was also a member of Phi Delta Kappa and Delta Kappa Gamma professional education organizations and was a longtime member of the Plantation Golf Club in Boise.
Mrs. Werner received the Boise Statesman Portrait of a Distinguished Citizen Award in June 1985 and the University of Idaho College of Education Service Award in recognition of outstanding service in education.
"She loved golf, was an avid reader and bridge player and traveled extensively," family members said. "She was a wonderful, loving mother and role model and will be greatly missed."
Survivors include two daughters, Linda R. Cook and Margie Epke, both of Boulder; two sisters, Arlene Parkinson of Las Vegas and Colleen Demick of Yakima, Wash.; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1955 and one sister, Toots Gutzman.
Services will be in Idaho.

Helen H. Werner Helen H. Werner, 84, of Boulder, Colo., formerly a resident of Boise, Kamiah and Salmon, Idaho, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004 in Louisville, Colo. She spent the last four years in the Boulder area to be near her daughters. Services will be held at the Community Presbyterian Church in Kamiah Saturday, Feb. 7 at 10:30 a.m. Pallbearers will be Bill Demick, John Epke, Craig Cook, Bob Gutzman, Doug Cook and Mike Epke. Mrs. Werner was born May 23, 1919, in Salmon to Charles Benjamin Hinchey and Mildred Hannah (Matthews) Hinchey. On Nov. 27, 1941, she married Daniel Glenn Werner in Hailey, Idaho. They both taught in Glenns Ferry and Weippe prior to moving to Spokane to work in the war effort. The Werners later moved to Stites and Kamiah where they continued teaching. When Mrs. Werner was widowed in 1955 she became the interim Superintendent of Schools in Kamiah, the position held by her husband prior to his death. She declined the permanent position of superintendent and became the first female high school principal in the state of Idaho, at Kamiah. Mrs. Werner received her bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Idaho and during her career in education served as a teacher, principal and superintendent. She moved to Boise in 1965 to work in the State Department of Education, retiring in 1985 from the position of Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Idaho. She was the first woman to hold this position. Mrs. Werner received many awards throughout her career, including The Boise Statesman Portrait of a Distinguished Citizen and the University of Idaho, College of Education Service Award, in recognition of outstanding service in education. She was very active in civic organizations and served as Worthy Matron of Crescent Chapter #45 of the Order of Eastern Star. She was also past president of the Boise chapter of Soroptomists International. She was also an active member of Phi Delta Kappa and Delta Kappa Gamma, professional education organizations. Mrs. Werner loved golf and was a longtime member of the Plantation Golf Club in Boise. She was an avid reader and bridge player and traveled extensively. She was a wonderful loving mother and a true role model and she will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Daniel Glenn Werner; and her sister, Mildred "Toots" Gutzman. She is survived by her two daughters, Linda Cook and husband Craig of Boulder and Margie Epke and husband John of Boulder; five grandchildren, Michael Epke, Lauren Epke, Erin Epke, Amy Ford and husband Rob, and Doug Cook; and one great-granddaughter, Laine Werner Ford. She is also survived by two sisters, Arlene Parkinson of Las Vegas and Colleen Demick of Yakima, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kamiah High School Library Fund at Rt. 1 Box 720, Kamiah.
