George and family were shown in the 1860 census (Jun 28 1860), Ross County, Ohio:¹

On Aug 4 1862, George M. Henshaw, age 34 [sic], enlisted as a Private, Company D, 89th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Union Army.^6,13,14,15 On Jan 28 1865 he was transferred to Company F, 15th Infantry, U.S. Veterans Reserve Corps (VRC).^6,14 Mustered out Jul 14 1865 at Cairo, Illinois.^13,14,16,17

On November 14, 1862 George wrote the following letter to his sister and brother-in-law, Malinda and Adam Neff:¹⁰

"Sacrifice at Chickamauga -- A History of the 89th Ohio Volunteers Regiment Infantry", by Bryan P. Weaver with H. Lee Fenner, has a profile of George Henshaw. It states he was wounded in his right side at the battle of Chicamauga, Georgia, on Sep 20 1863 and was sent to Washington Park U.S. Army Hospital in Cincinnati until December 1863. He was wounded in the same battle in which his brother-in-law, William Speaks, was killed.¹⁸
