He married Elizabeth Jane Speaks5,8,9 [Eliza Jane Speaks1,2,10,11, Eliza J. Shaker4], Aug 18 18595,8,9, Ross County, Ohio5,8,9.  Elizabeth, daughter of Samuel Speaks & Julia Ann Lemay, was born about 1842, Ohio.1,5,12  

George and family were shown in the 1860 census (Jun 28 1860), Ross County, Ohio:1

George M Henshaw, age 21, born in Ohio; farm hand; $100 personal property; married within the year.
Eliza J Henshaw, age 18, born in Ohio; married within the year.
Henshaw Julia Ann, age 1 month, born in Ohio.

On Aug 4 1862, George M. Henshaw, age 34 [sic], enlisted as a Private, Company D, 89th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Union Army.6,13,14,15  On Jan 28 1865 he was transferred to Company F, 15th Infantry, U.S. Veterans Reserve Corps (VRC).6,14  Mustered out Jul 14 1865 at Cairo, Illinois.13,14,16,17  

On November 14, 1862 George wrote the following letter to his sister and brother-in-law, Malinda and Adam Neff:10

general Hospital Pt. Pleasant va
November the 14 1862

Dear brother and sister.  I take my pin in hand to write a few lines to you to tell you how I am getting along.  I am not very well at this time.  I have had the ague and fever for some time until a few days ago and I have one of the big ist bites under my arm that you ever saw but I have not quit having sick men yet.  their was one pore fellow died here last nigh.  our regiment is sop at gauley bridge and tha expect to stay their all winter if nothing happens more than is expected.  I dont know whare I will go up the river this winter or not.  I am getting twenty two dollars a mont.  I have a good bed to sleep on and plenty eat and I think it is better to stay here.  thare is no rebels in the valley now and I dont think I am needed thare.  I will stay here till our moves some place els or the rebels comes back again.  I want you to write to me and tell me when you heard from John last and whare he was and I want you to know if you got your corn or not and how things look their this winter.  well I have wrote all I can this time.  I will do better the next tim.  no more at present but remain yours,

On March 20, 1863 Eliza wrote the following letter to her sister-in-law, Malinda:10

March the 20 a d 1863
My Dear Sister this morning i sete my self down to anser your kind and welcome letter that came to hand last week that found me enjoying good health.  i hav had good health all winter beter than i hav been seince i have bin merried.  I am as fat as a pigs house and sase is little anie.  she has not had eney sick spell seince last spring.  it apears to mee that she looks more and some like hur father evry day she lives.  i was quite happy to hear of your good ealth and they childrens.  i was quite surprised to hear of the fine Son that lyda fredeher had.  i had never thot of hur a bering eney children as she fot it of sow long but that is all the gosip know days but as good luck will hav it i am not in the company as you sade.  i will tell you what i hav done last week.  i have got rit smart of garden maid.  the weather was so nice i coden't let it pas off with out seting out some onions and beets and radishes peas and sow forth.  --- spoke of mea coming down to see you and stay a week.  well is shod bee very glad to spend a week with you if i cod but i am sow lize that i cant come to know.  Just wait till George comes home and then i will come to see you if i live and he livs to.  i am seething with pations for they time to come.  i meant to quilt two quilts as soon as they new goods coms on.  you sed you had rote to mee bee for.  if you did i dident get it at all.  i cod not think what had bee came of you.  if you had of rote eny thing insulting i wood hav rote and answer to it.  i will tell you whar George is at.  he is at camp Duglas illinois.  he belongs to the Co F 15 regiment VRC.  i got a letter from him a few days a go and he was well as comon.  he had Just get back from fortes monhan.  he had bin with prisners to bea exchanged.  well i had to stop and toch to my ...  that come in to see mee sow they aree gon home --- i will try to finish my letter.  anie is a begen me to come to see you as you to see hur father.  she gets sow lonely she dosnt know what to do.  some times if you cod come up to see me i wood bee mity glad to have you come.  i dont live very far from Roxabelle or frankfort station as it is cauled.  well i will tell you some thing about my eye.  i dont know whither it is poison or what is the matter.  it is swleled all most shut and ------ ------ i dont know what to do with it.  it is spreading all over my face.  i am looking for John and father up this month.  John sed he thot he wood get --- in this month.  i have not got eney letter for three or for weeks from him.  well i will have to bring my writing to a close by asking you to rite as soon as you get this and excuse my bad spelling and ----.  i remain as ever your sisterinlaw Eliza Jane Hinshaw.

"Sacrifice at Chickamauga -- A History of the 89th Ohio Volunteers Regiment Infantry", by Bryan P. Weaver with H. Lee Fenner, has a profile of George Henshaw.  It states he was wounded in his right side at the battle of Chicamauga, Georgia, on Sep 20 1863 and was sent to Washington Park U.S. Army Hospital in Cincinnati until December 1863.  He was wounded in the same battle in which his brother-in-law, William Speaks, was killed.18  

Elizabeth died Feb 2 1898, Charles County, Maryland.9,19,20
