Born Aug - 1884, Mississippi.1,2  

On Sep 12 1918 Nerthel Hanshaw, age 34, registered for the World War I draft in Gulfport, Harrison County, Mississippi.  He declared he was born August 18 1884, and was then residing at 702 Iroquois, Biloxi, Mississippi, employed as a teamster.  He declared his nearest relative was Francis Hanshaw of the same address.  He was recorded as Negro, medium height, medium build, black eyes, black hair, and "confined to bed with broken leg".3  

Samuel N. Hanshaw died after 1900.2
