Tim's Auto Group

Tim Coury started as an auto dealer at age 23 by opening Tim's Buick on Highway 69 near the present-day location of the Yavapai-Prescott Indian Tribe's casino in Prescott.  

Coury said he started with nine employees and only 25 to 30 cars.  

Thirty years later, Coury now presides over Tim's Auto Group, which consists of six dealerships with five locations and 165 employees.  (Besides Buick, the franchises are Toyota, General Motors, Scion, Hyundai and Subaru.)

Two years ago, Sheila Coury, the second-eldest of Coury's five daughters, joined the family business and is assistant business manager.  

Sheila, who was born and raised in Prescott and graduated in 2007 from St. Mary's Catholic High School in Phoenix, said she decided to enter the business to continue the family legacy.  

A former nursing student, she has learned more about the business by graduating in 2012 from a National Automobile Dealers Association program in McLean, Va.  

"I love it," Sheila said.  "Keeping busy.  It's fun.  There is never a dull moment."  

At 23, Sheila is single. However, her eldest sister, Tiphani, 24, is married to Robby Hinshaw, who joined the family business seven years ago and is now used-car director.  Hinshaw, 27, has been married for five years and has two children.  

Hinshaw said Coury hired him while he was courting Tiphani.  

Father, daughter and son-in-law work closely together, and with Ali Hussain, who has been general manager for two years.  They work out of headquarters, which sits on 22 acres on Willow Creek Road.  

"Ali directs them," Tim Coury said.  "As the dad and the father-in-law, I'm guiding them through life."  

Coury said his dealerships have experienced continuous growth over the years until the national economy slowed down after 2006.  

Since 1985, the family business has held retail market share in the Prescott area, Hussain said.  

Coury credits Hussain with boosting sales and service 30 percent and higher over the past two years.  

Katie Pehl, privilege tax supervisor for the city, said the 2012 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report lists Tim's as being one of the top 10 sales taxpayers in Prescott.  

Tim's Auto Group is likely to generate more sales tax revenues as the empire expands.  Coury opened a used-car lot this past August in Prescott Valley.  

Tim's plans to open a dealership in Mesa in six weeks and a dealership in June or July in Chino Valley, Hussain said.  

"Tim's Auto Group is in the market to purchase other stores," he said.  

Tim's also plays an active role in the community and has donated more than $1 million to area charities "or equivalent" since 2010, Tim Coury said.  

Coury, the founder and chief executive officer, said he has no immediate plans to retire from the dealership business.  He is a farmer as well, growing corn and alfalfa and raising black Angus cattle in the Big Chino basin.  

"I am going to stay active with them (the dealerships) as long as I physically can," he said.  

Coury said he wants the business to continue to the second and third generations - and beyond.

New general manager ready for expanded role, exciting ventures

He's young, full of energy, and as of Tuesday, Aug. 18, Robby Hinshaw is the new general manager of Tim's Auto Group.  

Hinshaw, 29, has taken over the role in place of Ali Hussain, who held the position for about four-and-a-half years.  

Since starting Tim's Auto Group 33 years ago, owner Tim Coury has always placed emphasis on his business being family owned and operated.  

Hinshaw fits that model well as he is Coury's son-in-law.  Coury also employs two other sons-in-law and five of his daughters.  

Hinshaw began his career with Tim's Auto Group nine years ago as a weekend cars salesman.  At the time, he was finishing school and working for the Granite Mountain Hotshots Crew 7.  

He continued selling cars for two years, worked his way into car finance and then became the used car manager.  

"I managed our used car inventory via pricing online, doing the trade-ins and going to auctions," Hinshaw said.  Tim was there "to teach me and help me grow."  

With his new position comes some new responsibility.  

"It's very exciting, but very overwhelming at the same time," Hinshaw said.  "There's a lot of stuff I was already involved with, but there are a lot of new ventures for me to get involved in."  

Whereas Hinshaw was managing a section of the company before, he is now keeping tabs on everything, including touching base with nearly 175 employees.  

However, Hinshaw isn't doing it alone.  According to Hinshaw, he will primarily be over operations and Manny Briseno, the general sales manager, will be overseeing sales at Tim's Auto Group.  

"I think Tim's future goal is for me to help more with dealer roles and Manny to help more with GM," Hinshaw said.  

Briseno has been the sales manager at Tim's Auto Group for 13 years.  

"I'll be backing up Robby and retaining our customer and employee relationships," said Briseno.  "Plus, Robby can't always be here, so I will back him up at the times that he's not here."  

Five years ago, Coury sent Hinshaw and Briseno to the National Automobile Dealers Association dealer school-a [sic] five week course.  The academy programs at NADA are designed to train current and future operators of automobile and truck dealerships in the latest industry trends and developments, as well as teach them the fundamentals needed to operate a successful and profitable automotive business, according the organization's website.  

"He (Coury) invested the money for us to go to that, so now it's definitely the time for us to put it to use," Hinshaw said.  

As for the future plans of the company, Hinshaw says they intend to continue the positive growth they've been experiencing over the years, as well as potentially expand.  

"I think in Tim's future, he'd love to see another franchise or two that we could bring in here," Hinshaw said.  

"The goal is to work as a team and help each other grow in any way we can.  We've got a good group of employees and we're going to continue to employ good people and that will be the difference for our customers."

Robby Hinshaw grew up around the car business.  

"My grandfather sold cars at a local dealership for almost 20 years," Hinshaw said.  

Hinshaw began his career with Timís Auto Group in 2006 as a weekend cars salesman.  At the time, he was finishing school and working for the Prescott Fire Department Crew 7 -- also known as the Granite Mountain Hotshots.  

Discovering he really enjoyed helping people make what is often the second most expensive purchase decision in their lives, he decided to stick with it and give up on fighting fires.  

"It was exciting and fun," Hinshaw said.  "I managed to build a massive amount of relationships in the industry."  

After serving as the companyís finance manager for two years and then its used car director for four, he was promoted to general manager in 2015.  

On a daily basis, Hinshaw is responsible for keeping tabs on everything, including touching base with nearly 175 employees.  

"I meet with the management team to discuss daily, weekly and monthly goals," Hinshaw said.  "I also regularly meet with the controller to discuss financial aspects of the business."  

Once those are done, he often walks the lot, talks to staff and meets and greets customers.  

Heís found that people and processes are the key to what he does.  

"Have the right people to execute the right processes and create a great work atmosphere," Hinshaw said.  

"That in turn translates into excellent customer service."
