Joann's obituary was published in the "Kansas City Star" (Kansas City, Missouri) on Friday, January 4, 2013:1

Sylvia Joann Richards, 81, Kansas City, Mo., passed away Dec. 31, 2012.  Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO 64052.  Interment at Mt. Washington Cemetery.  Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, at the Chapel.  The family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer's Association , 3846 W. 75th St., Prairie Village, KS 66208.  Joann was born Oct. 19, 1931, in Kansas City and graduated from Northeast High School.  She served in the U.S. Naval Reserve.  She was the bookkeeper for Platte Office Supply in Platte Woods, Mo., for many years and also was a seasonal tax preparer for H&R Block in Claycomo.  She enjoyed cross stitching, ceramics and had bowled in leagues at Antioch Lanes earlier in her life.  Joann was preceded in death by sisters, Dorothy and Shirley and brother, Roy.  She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Ben Richards, of the home; sons, Tim Richards and wife Cindy, Carrollton, Mo., Tom Richards and wife Tracy, Flower Mound, Texas, and Todd Richards and wife Shelley, Liberty, Mo.; brothers, Roger Henshaw and wife Gina, Kearney, Mo., and Ross Henshaw, Blue Springs, Mo.; grandchildren, Angela, Benjamin, Tanner, Tyler, Morgan and great-grandchildren Renee and Jocelyn.  Condolences may be sent to the family at  Arr.: Carson-Speaks Chapel, (816) 252-7900.
