The following biographical sketch of John R. Hinshaw appears in the book "History of Parke County, Indiana" by JH Beadle:3
J.R. HINSHAW, farmer, Bloomingdale, was b. in Parke Co, IN Nov 9, 1844. His parents removed to Clay Co, IN in 1848 where his father d. in 1854. Mr. Hinshaw remained at home, working on the farm, and attending school during the winter seasons. In this way, he received a good common school education and has been engaged in teaching school during the winters for a number of years, and is considered by the people where he has taught to be capable of both teaching and governing a school. In 1873, he was marr. to Miss G. ALLEN, d/o of Samuel Allen, who was an early settler of Parke Co. He has long been a prominent member of the Society of Friends, and in politics he takes sides with the republican party.
