Ross quit school in the 10th grade when the principal at Boxley School slammed his head on his desk for a prank he mistakenly thought Ross had done.  Ross hired out as a farm hand until he acquired enough money to buy a 400-acre farm near Sheridan, Indiana.1  

He married Aletha Frances Teter1,12 [Lethia Frances Teter13, Letha Frances Teter14], May 16 19141,12, Hamilton County, Indiana1,12.  Aletha, daughter of Hiram Franklin Teter & Ida May Brown, was born Jun 8 1895, Adams Township, Hamilton County, Indiana.3,11,13,14,15  

Ross met Aletha and first started dating her when she was living on a farm across the fields from the Milton Hinshaw farm.1  

On Jun 5 1917 Harlan Ross Hinshaw, age 25, registered for the World War I draft in Sheridan, Hamilton County, Indiana.  He declared he was born March 16 1892 in Hamilton County, Indiana, and was then residing near Sheridan, Indiana where he was a self-employed farmer with a wife and one child.  He claimed an exemption due to "wife & child".  He was recorded as medium height, medium build, blue eyes, light hair and an [..unreadable..] disability.7

Aletha died Jan - 1928, near Sheridan, Hamilton County, Indiana; buried Section S Row 1, Boxley Cemetery, Boxley, Hamilton County, Indiana.1,11  

He then married Nellie Goff, 1928, Hamilton County, Indiana.1  Nellie, daughter of Henry Calvin + Maud Cleo Goff, was born Jul 10 1904, (probably Hamilton County), Indiana.1,2,4,11,16  

Nellie held a master's degree in elementary education from Ball State University.  She served as a school teacher off and on for half a century.1,11  She began her career in the early 1920s at Boxley School and retired in 1974 from the Cicero Elementary School, both in central Indiana.1  

In 1929 Ross bought his father's home place near Boxley, Indiana.  In 1930 Ross bought and lived on a large farm near Arcadia.  Noted for his frugality, Ross became a respected farmer, cattle feeder, and real estate speculator.1

On Apr 27 1942 Harlan Ross Hinshaw, age 50, registered for the World War II draft in Hamilton County, Indiana.  He declared he was born March 16 1892 in Hamilton County, Indiana, and was then residing on R1, Arcadia, Jackson Township, Hamilton County, Indiana where he was farming.  He declared his relative/contact was Nellie Hinshaw of the same address.  He was recorded as 5' 8" tall, 150 lbs., blue eyes, gray hair, light complexion, and under "physical characteristics": "index finger + thumb - left hand 2nd joint".8  

Harlan Ross Hinshaw died Mar 1 1943, on his farm near Arcadia, Hamilton County, Indiana; buried Section S Row 1, Boxley Cemetery, Boxley, Hamilton County, Indiana.1,11  Medical: Ross died from a heart attack.1  

Nellie died Mar 31 1989, Arcadia, Hamilton County, Indiana; buried Section S Row 1, Boxley Cemetery, Boxley, Hamilton County, Indiana.1,11,16
