Born about 18851 [about 18832], Virginia1.
Belle had a son, Robert Criger, born c1903,2,3,4 fathered by Mr. Criger, husband of Belle's sister, Sarah. Belle left Virginia in disgrace, but she left her son to be raised by her sister Cannie and her husband, Robert Hill (he apparently assumed the Hill surname as he was shown in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses as "Robert Hill"). Robert Criger later joined his mother Belle in Topeka, Kansas.5
In 1909 Belle left Virginia, first settling in Illinois, then in Kansas.5 On Jan 21 1912 Belle wrote a letter from her home at 400 East 4th Street, Topeka, Kansas to her parents in Virginia, excerpted here:6
