James and family apparently moved from Indiana to Iowa sometime between 1841 & 1843.²

James and family were shown in the 1852 Iowa state census, Perry Township, Davis County, Iowa.⁵

James and family were again shown in the 1860 census (Jun 5 1860), Lick Creek Township, Davis County, Iowa.²

James reportedly deserted his family about 1860.⁴ (Given the timeframe, it's possible he might have joined the war and either never returned home or was perhaps killed).⁶ [an unidentified James R. Hanshaw did enlist on Mar 17 1863 as a Private in Company G, 8th Indiana Cavalry,⁷ but there is no way to know if it was James Rafter Hanshaw or not].

Mary and daughter Marietta were shown living alone in the 1870 census (Jul 8 1870), Bloomfield, Fox River Township, Davis County, Iowa:³
