James Rafter Hanshew1 [James Rafter Handshaw1].

Born about 1815, Ohio.1,2

He married Mary Trullinger, Jun 12 1840, Fountain County, Indiana.1,4  Mary, daughter of Abraham Kidd Trullinger & Margaret Trullinger1,2,4, was born Mar 8 18211,2,4, Indiana1,2,4 [Ohio3].

James and family apparently moved from Indiana to Iowa sometime between 1841 & 1843.2

James and family were shown in the 1852 Iowa state census, Perry Township, Davis County, Iowa.5

James and family were again shown in the 1860 census (Jun 5 1860), Lick Creek Township, Davis County, Iowa.2

James Hanshew, age 45, born in Ohio; farmer & carpenter; $100 real estate; $400 personal property.
Mary Hanshew, age 39, born in Indiana.
Caroline Hanshew, age 19, born in Indiana.
Margaret Hanshew, age 16, born in Iowa.
William Hanshew, age 18, born in Iowa.
Sarah Hanshew, age 8, born in Iowa.
Betsy A. Handshaw, age 6, born in Iowa.
Mariett Handshaw, age 4, born in Iowa.
Note that this family's record spanned across two pages of the 1860 census; on the first page the family name was clearly spelled "Hanshew", yet the last two children of the same family were clearly enumerated on the second page as "Handshaw".2

James reportedly deserted his family about 1860.4  (Given the timeframe, it's possible he might have joined the war and either never returned home or was perhaps killed).6  [an unidentified James R. Hanshaw did enlist on Mar 17 1863 as a Private in Company G, 8th Indiana Cavalry,7 but there is no way to know if it was James Rafter Hanshaw or not].

Mary and daughter Marietta were shown living alone in the 1870 census (Jul 8 1870), Bloomfield, Fox River Township, Davis County, Iowa:3

Henshew, Mary, age 49, born in Ohio; farmer; $700 real estate; $100 personal property.
Henshew, Marietta, age 14, born in Iowa; attended school.
Living next door in 1870 was the family of daughter Caroline.8

James Rafter Hanshew might be the same as James Hanshew #2745.6
