In 1912 Mary and James emmigrated to the U.S., eventually settling in Butte, Montana, where they had a home on Anaconda Road.4
On Jun 6 1917 James McDermott, age 28, registered for the World War I draft in Silver Bow County, Montana. He declared he was born October 3 1889 in Lancashire, England (an alien), and was then residing at 425 1/2 Anaconda Rd., Butte, Montana where he was married and a miner employed by Butte Sulphur Mining Co. of Black Rock, Montana. He claimed exemption due to "support family". He was recorded as medium height, medium build, hazel eyes, auburn hair, and "weak left hip from fracture".7
Mary and family were shown in the 1920 census (Jan 8 1920), living with the family of a Nevin & Nellie Nagle (Nellie possibly related) at 779 Trumbull Ave., Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan:1
