Born Jun 23 1828, Randolph County, North Carolina.1,3,4,10,13,14,15,16,17  

John moved as a toddler with his family to McLean County, Illinois in 1830.  There he went to school in a log school house with puncheon seats.6  

In the 1850 Illinois census, John's real estate holding were valued at $50.  He was listed as still living at home with his parents at age 22.13,18  

He married Sarah Ann Drake, Feb 2 1858, McLean County, Illinois.1,5,6,14,15,19,20  Sarah, daughter of William Drake & Mary Gilstrap1,6,14,15, was born Sep 26 18371,6,14,15 [about 18393], Coles County, Illinois1,6,14,15.  

John and family were shown in the 1860 census (Jun 13 1860), Stout's Grove, Danvers Township, McLean County, Illinois:21

In 1867 John and family moved to Cropsey Township, McLean County, Illinois.  There he purchased 160 acres at $5 per acre.  John lived to see cash rent of that same amount per acre.6

Nancy was the widow of Edward Jones, who she had married Jan 20 1853, Adams County, Ohio.  Edward Jones had died in 1866 and Nancy then came with her 6 children to McLean County, Illinois.6

John was a Republican and filled various township offices of trust.  He was a Justice of the Peace.1  He has been described as a "silent thinker", opposed to fictitious literature.  The only book he read was the bible.  He was neither a borrower nor a lender.6  

John and Nancy moved to Anchor, Illinois, in 1899.

Medical: John had failing eyesight in last twenty years of life.  He was practically blind in last three or four years of life.1,6  

John was recorded in the McLean County tax assessment list of 1901, town of Anchor.26  

John Hinshaw died Feb 7 1902, Anchor, McLean County, Illinois; buried Antioch Cemetery, route 165, east of Colfax, McLean County, Illinois.1,6,14,16,17
