Delphina, a lovely young lady with a wealth of black curly hair, captivated a handsome young man, Allen Hiatt, whose parents had gone west before the Civil War. They were married in September, 1884, and began making plans for a permanent home.
But tragedy came into the picture. Delphina contracted tuberculosis, a common scourge of that day. This dread disease spread to others in her family. including little Stella, who lived just "Five months, twenty-seven days". Death then came for Delphina herself in 1886. Allen Hiatt lived until 1889, when he too died of tuberculosis. The burden of caring for the stricken Hiatt family fell most heavily upon Mary Hinshaw.
