SFC U.S. Army (Ret) William V. Hanshaw, 74 of Salem, AL died Tuesday June 14, 2011 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, AL.  Funeral services with military honors will be held Friday, June 17, 2011 at 11:30 A.M. EDT in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 3770 Hwy 431 N. and 280 W., Phenix City, AL 36867.  The family will receive friends from 10:30 am until 11:30 am EDT prior to the service at the funeral home.  

Mr. Hanshaw was born February 23, 1937 in Clay County, West Virginia, son of the late Harmon J. and Salina Harold Hanshaw.  He was retired from the U.S. Army, a member of the V.F.W. Post 5228, the D.A.V. in Valley, Alabama and Faith Evangelist Church in Valley,Alabama.  Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Ollie Rhodes, Rebecca Kyle, infant Gladys Hanshaw, Lenna Sumner, Garnie Hamrick, Chattie Stickel, one infant brother, Cecil and two nephews.  

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Ruth S. Hanshaw of Salem, AL, sons, William Patrick Hanshaw, David Lee Hanshaw, daughter, Virginia Ruth Hanshaw, sisters, Beulah Woods of Summerville, WV, Iris Shimer of Charleston, WV, brothers, Patrick Hanshaw of Cottageville, WV, Delbert G. Hanshaw of Rossville, GA, H. Jackson Hanshaw of Martinsville, VA, two grandchildren, one great grandchild, 32 nieces and nephews, little dog "Charlie" and a host of friends.
