William was the brother of Mindia Edith Thomas who married Emma's brother Romie Watson Hanshaw, and also the brother of Hiram "Albert" Thomas who married Emma's sister Icie Jane Hanshaw.j

Emma's obituary was published in the "Charleston Daily Mail" (Charleston, West Virginia) on Thursday, October 19, 1944:a

Thomas, Mrs. Emma Etta, 53, died yesterday morning at her home at Ivydale after a short illness.    Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Audrey Hales and Miss Emelene Thomas of Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Marlen Cottrell of Ivydale; three sons, Darius of Ward, Pfc. Guy Thomas of the army, in England, and Opra of Bickmore; her father, Henry Hanshaw of Valley Fork; five sisters, Mrs. Minnie Donahue of Indiana, Mrs. Icie Thomas of Valley Fork, Mrs. Bessie Hughes of Zela, Mrs. Dorothy Wilmoth of Maysel and Mrs. Hattie Woodall of Wallback; three brothers, Bruce Hanshaw of Valley Fork, Jack Hanshaw of Procious and Lloyd Hanshaw of Ovapa.    Services will be held at 2:30 p. m. tomorrow at Hively cemetery at Valley Fork.    Rev. James Cottrell will officiate.    The Hardman and Hardman mortuary at Clay is in charge of arrangements.    The body will remain at the mortuary until funeral time.
