A biography of son William appeared in the 1889 "Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Fayette County", in which the following is mentioned about James:3
James S. Henshaw was born November 20, 1809. He was a farmer - was a democrat - held various township offices and was a ruling elder in the Presbyterian church at Laurel Hill for a number of years. He was first married to Miss Ann, daughter of Jonathan Gray, May 24, 1848. She died October 31,1850. They had two children: Jonathan G., deceased and William. His second wife was Miss Harriett, daughter of George Chalfant; she died in 1866. They had six children, of whom three are now living: Clarissa F., married to Samuel W Dunn; Elizabeth, married to Hiram Rankin; and Samuel W., married to Elizabeth Hankins. In 1860 he married Miss Maria Jane McDougle, who still survives him. They had two children, one of whom is now living: Mary Margaret, unmarried. He was a successful farmer and a steady, earnest man; he died October 20, 1878.
