Craig Trent Hinshaw 75, of Indianapolis, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on February 19, 2015. Craig is survived by his loving wife, Kay, of 47 years and three sons, Trent, Matthew (Kara) and Mark (Amy), seven grandchildren, three sisters, Ann Edwards (Gary), Jean Murphy (Ed), Jane Kelley (Ken) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by father, Herman Hinshaw, and mother, Ruth Hinshaw.
Craig was the oldest of four children and only son of Herman and Ruth Hinshaw. Born on February 8, 1940 in Noblesville, his family moved to Indianapolis when his father accepted a coaching position. While attending Shortridge High School, Craig was a member of Club 30, Key Club, the golf team as well as the track and cross country teams. After high school, he attended Indiana University in Bloomington and graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Chemistry. Upon college graduation in 1963, he served 6 months active duty and 5½ years reserve duty in the US Army. He began his career at the Indiana State Department of Health where he eventually became Director of Environmental Chemistry, Radio Chemistry and Consumer Health Chemistry laboratories. After serving the people of Indiana for 45 years, he retired in 2008.
Craig was born into a family with a Masonic background. He was a 50 year member of Millersville Masonic Lodge #126, Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine. He served as Murat Shrine Potentate in 2010 and was proud that his three sons were also members of these Masonic organizations. Craig served on the Board of Governors for the Chicago Shriners' Hospital for Children from 2004-2014 and was a member of Murat Reception Unit (president 2002), Kentucky Colonels, Mobil Nobles, the Order of Quetzalcoatl, Cabiri International, Kowad 'al Sabikin, Knights of Venus, Yacht Club, Corvette Club and Royal Order of Jesters. He was an honorary member of Murat Motorcycle Club, Dramatic Cast, Firemen's Club and Police Club. He was awarded his 50 year DeMolay pin and was also a member of Prather Yorkrite, Red Cross of Constantine and the Royal Order of Scotland.
Family was always a priority with Craig and he was very involved with his three sons' education and sporting events. He served as a US swim official for nearly 15 years, traveling with his sons to swim meets throughout the state, out of state and occasionally to swim meets in Canada. He and his sons also enjoyed their membership in a father/son group that camped out at various state parks where they enjoyed fishing, canoeing and cave exploring. He also loved spending time with his seven grandchildren: Sam, Quinn, Hanson, Luke, Kate, Belle and Brady. Craig liked sports of all kinds, but especially enjoyed playing golf. He was a big IU football and basketball enthusiast as well as a Colts fan. Throughout the years, he and Kay enjoyed playing bridge with friends and neighbors.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 from 4-8 p.m. at Flanner and Buchanan-Washington Park North. Funeral will be at Chapel Rock Christian Church, 2020 N. Girls School Rd, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 25, 2015, with the service starting at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to:Shriners Hospitals for Children, c/o Murat Shriners, 510 N. New Jersey St., Indianapolis, IN 46204-1567.
